Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida has confirmed that the latest installment of the long-running JRPG series will address “more adult” themes compared to its predecessors.
Two years ago, Final Fantasy XVI was confirmed to have an M-rating or PEGI-18, making it the first mainline game in the franchise’s history to be rated M for mature. Final Fantasy fans were shocked yet ecstatic when this was revealed.
This week, Yoshida finally revealed the reason why the game received an M rating. In an interview with Gamespot, Yoshida said the team purposely pursued a higher rating in order to allow for more creative freedom.
“When trying to tell a story with difficult adult themes, these ratings can end up becoming somewhat of a hindrance. And you find yourself changing things that you wanted to do in the game based on that rating,” said Yoshida.
“This time, to make sure that we could tell the story that we wanted in the way that we wanted to, we decided to pursue a mature rating in most of the regions that will be releasing the game,” he added.
However, an M-rating doesn’t necessarily mean that Yoshida and his team will make the game extremely violent. Rather, it is to allow the developers to explore more mature themes that the game aims to tackle.
If having an M rating will allow the developers to have more creative freedom to tell the story and create the game they envision, then hardcore fans will surely be supportive of this directional change for the series.
FFXVI is currently slated to release in the Summer of 2023 on the PlayStation 5.
