Some of England's humiliated Ashes stars were kicked out of an Australian bar Joe Root and James Anderson were amongst the players drinking until dawn England coach Graham Thorpe could lose his job after he filmed the viral video  Yet Monty Panesar insists the drinking release post-series is part of cricket

Former England spin-king Monty Panesar has staunchly defended Joe Root’s side after a viral video emerged of some players being kicked out of a rooftop bar in Hobart, insisting their professionalism should not be questioned.

England coach Graham Thorpe could lose his job after he filmed Root and James Anderson drinking with Australian players who had just thrashed them in the Ashes, with police ordering them to leave the bar after ‘loudly’ drinking until 6am.

A heavy booze culture has also been revealed on the tour Down Under yet Panesar – who was fined after he urinated on a bouncer following his ejection from a Brighton nightclub in 2013 – said the public should remember what cricketers have done for them in terms of entertainment during the pandemic before judging their actions.

‘I think there’s too much pressure on sportspeople – let’s not forget that they went out for us in the last 18 months, we were all in a Covid bubble and we wanted some entertainment on TV, they went out there and did that,’ Panesar told Sportsmail

‘So let’s not forget about the entertainment that they are providing for the normal person who enjoys cricket, and loves cricket, right.

‘So if anyone’s going to be harsh on them, I’m telling that person “please, take a back seat, think about the last 18 months and what they’ve gone through, particularly in the first and second lockdown when there was Test cricket being played, think about that before people start questioning the professionalism.”

‘They’ve done a lot for people to watch cricket while the public was in lockdown.’

The incident, which was filmed by Thorpe but somehow ended up on the website of the Sydney Morning Herald, took place at 6am on Monday, just over eight hours after the end of the fifth and final Test at Hobart.

It shows Root, Anderson and three Australian players – Nathan Lyon, Alex Carey and Travis Head – being told to move from the terrace of the hotel the two teams have been sharing.

England quickly issued an apology ‘for any inconvenience caused’, but there is fury at the ECB – not only because Thorpe felt the need to film what happened on either his iPhone or an iPad, but because the footage then reached the public domain, only hours after revelations emerged that a disastrous Ashes tour had been hit by a drinking culture involving players and back-room staff alike.

Panesar, who played 50 Test matches for England and took 167 wickets in seven years from 2006-2013, added the incident should not be blown out of proportion, detailing that drinking with the opposition after series’ had concluded was common on most tours.

‘After every tour, teams get together and talk about the good and bad times. It’s just part of cricket culture really, you’re always going to reminisce with people about bowling really well, or not getting someone out,’ the 39-year-old said.

‘It’s a very common thing that happens in cricket and it’s a nice thing, it should happen because otherwise you lose that sense of friendship and camaraderie. I don’t think anything should be blown out of proportion.

‘I remember when I was playing under Andy Flower. If anyone got a 5er or a 100, we’d have some beers and it brought that club, Saturday environment just to take off the intensity and have a more relaxed atmosphere – and it worked really well.

‘It got players to perform well by switching on and off, they’ve had such an intense time over the months and this was their time to switch off. And they’re allowed to do that.

‘These players are performing day in, day out. The Covid bubble hasn’t helped, they get mental fatigue, there’s nothing wrong with having a few beers with the rest of the team and just talking about cricket.’

Yet the former Sussex and Essex bowler did note that the team should review how the players are dealing with life in the Covid bubble amid the 4-0 Ashes humiliation and ahead of March’s tour of the West Indies.

‘This is a discussion they should have. How do you deal with this Covid bubble environment? Is it affecting us? How do we make sure not to get tired from it?

‘Sometimes it affects your training, we’ve seen with Jonny Bairstow – he was fit but it’s affected him as he’s put on a bit of weight. But it hasn’t affected his mindset and character of counter-attack – that’s the important part, that mental toughness that you need.

‘That’s something that they’ll definitely review.’
