Ex-principal dancer at English National Ballet jailed for sexual abuse of female students

A former principal dancer at the English National Ballet who sexually assaulted young female students has been jailed for nine years.

Yat-Sen Chang, 50, preyed on four victims aged between 16 and 19 over the course of seven years, offering massages to get close to them.

Isleworth crown court heard the young women were “starstruck” by Chang while he believed his fame and status made him untouchable.

He “giggled” and “laughed” after carrying out some of the attacks, leaving his teenage victims “haunted” by feelings of shame and anxiety.

The Cuban dancer was the principal dancer at the English National Ballet from 1993 until his departure in 2011, performing in shows including The Nutcracker, Coppelia and Sleeping Beauty.

He went on to teach young ballet dancers at specialist schools in London and carried out a series of sexual assaults between December 2009 and April 2016.

Sentencing him to nine years in prison, Judge Edward Connell told Chang: “You were held in very high regard by the ballet community, and such was your fame that a studio was named after you.

“Over a period of seven years, you took advantage of your fame and position of trust as a teacher of young women. You engaged in grooming-type behaviour.

“You began with what seemed like a normal massage – it quickly turned into an opportunity to sexually abuse them.

“As time went on and your abuse went unreported, your risk taking increased and you became emboldened.”

Prosecutor Joel Smith told the court Chang was “a man with power and prestige, using them to abuse younger women”.

“He trusted that his fame and his position would protect him from complaint, or from consequences of his actions”, he said.

In an impact statement, one of the victims said she had “looked up” to Chang and it took her time to appreciate his actions had been “completely unacceptable”.

“It all happened a very long time ago. I tried to move past it, but key moments I can’t forget, which have haunted me in the past five years”, she said, adding that Chang had “ruined most of my late teenage years.”

Saying she has been left “haunted, violated, shamed, and humiliated”, she told the court: “I hope he does face up to what he has done with regret and pain.”

Another victim said the attack by Chang had been her first sexual experience, telling the court: “It made me upset and I never wanted to be in this position.”

In one of the incidents, Chang suggested the young woman lie down and began massaging her leg before moving his hands higher up. On another occasion, he took her to the male changing room and stripped off before trying to hug her.

Another victim said she “froze like a log” when Chang started to sexually abuse her, and third told police Chang had “giggled” after carrying out an assault.

Chang attempted to stop two of the victims from reporting the abuse and told one of the young women she “shouldn’t tell her mum about the massages”.

The ballet dancer first came under police investigation in April 2016 when one of the women came forward to report the abuse.

He denied all the charges but was convicted earlier this year of 12 counts of sexual assault and one count of assault by penetration.

Chang’s barrister Kathryn Hirst said he knows his ballet career is now over and though he continues to protest his innocence he “respects the jury’s verdicts”.

“You offending had a profound impact on all your victims, and you have demonstrated no remorse for your appalling behaviour”, the judge told him.

Chang, who lives in Germany, will be on the sexual offenders register for life, and must serve two-thirds of his prison sentence.
