Every word Ryan Lowe said on Preston North End's 1-4 cup win at Huddersfield Town

Preston North End booked their place in the second round of the Carabao Cup with a 1-4 away win at Huddersfield Town.

Troy Parrott opened the scoring after six minutes and a brace from Ali McCann sent PNE in at the break three goals to the good. Brad Potts added a fourth in the second half and Jordan Rhodes pulled a consolation goal back for the home side.

Here’s what North End boss Ryan Lowe had to say in his post-match press conference.

You must be really pleased, Ryan?

“Just a bit!” he said. “Fantastic. Everything we asked the lads to do, they did. We asked for a bit of ruthlessness and the patterns of play, the way we worked it, how quickly we moved the ball, it was fantastic, on a pitch which was long and not too good. But we kept going, kept playing and stuck to the task in hand. That was to score goals and to obviously win.”

You set the tone from the first minute?

“We did,” he said. “And I think we had to, because with all due respect, when you know a team is not in too good form, we felt we needed to be right on it from the first minute. Even though they made a few changes, so did we and and we knew we had to come here, quieten the crowd a little bit, get on the front foot, play our football and dominate the ball. I think we did that.”

Troy’s first goal was a lovely finish – you said yesterday about getting him that first one.

“A great finish, yeah, hence why I played him,” Lowe said. “I felt that Emil will score goals and it was a toss of a coin who to start, but I felt that if I started Troy it would be a a good opportunity for him to get off the mark in a cup game. He did that and I have got no question that he will continue that.

“There is no pressure on him; the strikers will score goals. I wanted to give Troy those minutes, to get off the mark, and he did just that so I am really pleased. He could’ve had another one, when he got into a position to get a shot away and could’ve slid (Ali McCann) in. I have just looked and we had six shots on target, scored four goals, rattled the inside of the crossbar and the post as well – so overall, pleased. We hadn’t scored so to get four and get through to the next round, is really pleasing.”

Will that be a big weight off Troy’s shoulders? Just getting that first one.

“Probably yeah, but I don’t want him to have any weight on his shoulders regarding scoring goals,” said Lowe. “It will be one of many hopefully and I am sure it will be. If you ask Troy, it might be (weight off) because three games in, he has now got his goal and can hit the ground running, which is what I want. The way we play our football, he is definitely going to get chances, even if it’s a two-yard tap-in – he’ll find himself scoring goals, as long as he’s in the right place at the right time.”

Fernandez got into some great positions and his touch looked immaculate?

“He’s an immaculate kid though isn’t he?” said Lowe. “Everything about him. He’s asked questions on a daily basis, is playing a different role to what he is probably used to at Manchester United – as a left wing-back for us, not left-back. The competition with him and Robbie Brady down that side, let’s have it right, he is learning off one of the best – who has played in the Premiership.

“He is educating him all the time, even before the game and after the game. He is a fantastic talent – you don’t play for Real Madrid and Manchester United if you are not any good. We knew that when we saw him, we knew he’d bring something different to us and he certainly did that tonight.

“We were second in the Championship from the first two games for crosses into the box. We were just not getting on to the end of them, so we have been pushing our number eights to get into those positions for crosses. Tonight, little Ali McCann has popped up with two so yeah, unbelievable. It is having that commitment and desire to get there – I always say that if you want to score, you’ve got to believe you will score. The balls going into the box, the difference was having people on the end of them tonight.”

If Ali can keep doing what he did tonight, he’s going to be some player isn’t he?

“Yeah, fantastic,” said Lowe. “He’s scored goals in his career and he’s scored international goals. It’s different styles and formations – when we first came in, he was playing as a number eight and at right wing-back as well, because of his energy levels and the quality of him.

“He’s now got to have that consistency of scoring goals – I want all of my midfielders to score goals. Even the likes of Ryan and Whitey – when they play in the ‘four’ positions it will be hard for them to score 30-yard shots, because I don’t want them getting that high up the pitch. But, when you are playing different formations and styles, it allows the lads to get higher up the pitch – just like tonight with Ali.”

Were you gutted Brad Potts’ volley didn’t go in during the first half?

“I was jumping out of my seat,” said Lowe. “I actually asked the linesman if his watch had gone off; I thought it was broken. It would’ve been an unbelievable goal, but he can get there, he scored an unbelievable goal at Stoke last season. To get there again, he has just got to have more belief Pottsy and if he’s got that belief, he is phenomenal in those positions. Then Ben Woodburn hit one in the second half that bounced under (off the bar) so yeah, the performance was top drawer tonight from all of them and they warranted the win.”

Has it shown tonight, that you can make six changes and not alter the quality too much?

“Yeah, I knew it wouldn’t alter the quality because they all train on a daily basis,” said Lowe. “The team that we set-up on Monday, to beat Huddersfield with, they will pop the ball around the way we want them to. We knew they would go long a bit, at times, to Rhodes, with runners off him.

“But my lads are taught, on a daily basis, to play football and the lads who hadn’t been in the team for the first few games were champing at the bit. It doesn’t matter to me who plays as long as they perform to the best of their ability and that is what they have done tonight. But, I must say that the lads have performed very well in the two games before, so it’s a good situation to be in as a manager – knowing there are players there, champing at the bit to perform when called upon.”

And to get three young lads on the pitch as well?

“Yeah, brilliant – Mikey (O’Neill) has been around it and made his debut last year but I said at half-time, that we felt there were more goals for us and – without being disrespectful – not to take their feet off the gas,” said Lowe. “We wanted to keep going and I said that they have all been young lads before, and that I wanted to get the kids on to the pitch.

“Jacob Slater has been fantastic for us and he’s made his debut in the Carabao Cup. Mikey has already made his Championship and then Lewis Leigh, for him to make his debut, is really pleasing. That’s what I asked the lads to do – to get those lads on the pitch in the second half – and that’s what they did.”
