Everton FC 1 – 0 Brentford FC

Everton vs Brentford

19:34

Everton secured Premier League safety with a cagey win over Brentford, with Gueye scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park. The first half lacked quality in the attack, with Everton failing to hit the target with any of their 12 efforts, amassing an xG of 0.63. McNeil’s cross-shot went just wide of the right post, with Doucoure lashing a volley wide off target after a clever flick from Chermiti. Toney was then denied at close range by Pickford, and McNeil rattled the bar from distance before Gueye gave the hosts the lead. Harrison’s cutback rebounded to the midfielder, who crashed his first-time effort into the top corner. McNeil then went close to doubling Everton’s lead, but he drilled his low strike from the left across the goal and wide of the right post. The Toffees have won their last four games at Goodison Park, keeping four clean sheets in that time. They travel to Luton for their next match, with the Hatters one point from safety. As for Brentford, they drop to 15th position and their five-match unbeaten run ends. The Bees go to Fulham for their upcoming game. That’s all for today, goodbye.

Everton vs Brentford

19:21

BAR! Garner is over a free-kick on the left in a crossing position but goes for goal himself from a wide angle and crashes the bar. That would have been a superb goal to win it for Everton.

Everton vs Brentford

19:20

There will be six minutes of additional time.

Everton vs Brentford

19:19

Yellow Card Bryan Tetsadong Marceau Mbeumo

Everton vs Brentford

19:19

Mbeumo has been involved in nine goals in his last 10 Premier League starts (four goals and five assists), while Brentford have won 39 per cent of their league games when the Cameroonian has started this season (7/18), compared to 12.5 per cent when he hasn’t (2/16). He has had 47 touches so far and won three fouls, but has only completed just over 50 per cent of his passes and has struggled to challenge Everton’s defence.

Everton vs Brentford

Jensen turns in possession and rolls a pass through to Toney, who looks to combine with Yarmoliuk. However, offside is given.

Everton vs Brentford

19:15

OFFSIDE AGAIN! Chermiti slides across to win a loose ball just inside Brentford’s half, with Onana driving forward with possession. He gets to the edge of the box and has options on either side, rolling a pass through to Doucoure, who has his shot saved before the flag goes up.

Everton vs Brentford

19:13

OFFSIDE! Another chance for Everton! McNeil slides a clever throughball down the middle of the pitch to Chermiti, who wrestles away Collins before chipping his effort just wide of the target. The flag then goes up against the forward.

Everton vs Brentford

19:12

Substitution Kristoffer Vassbakk Köpp Ajer Mads Roerslev Rasmussen

Everton vs Brentford

19:11

Brentford have scored eight goals in their last two Premier League away games, netting five on the road for the first ever time ever in the top-flight last time out at Luton. They’re looking to score three or more goals in three consecutive away league games for the first time since November 2019 in the Championship. They have only created an xG of 0.77 so far and have been frustrated by Everton’s resolute defence. Frank is about to make another change.

Everton vs Brentford

19:09

Jensen has possession in the midfield, and he looks to lift a pass down the right to Mbeumo, but he puts too much power on the ball, sending it out for a goal-kick. There is an audible groan from the away fans, with the Goodison Park faithful enjoying that one.

Everton vs Brentford

19:06

Substitution Idrissa Gana Gueye Amadou Ba Zeund Georges Mvom Onana

Everton vs Brentford

19:06

SAVE! Pickford makes another good stop! Lewis-Potter has been bright since coming on. This time, he carries the ball forward down the left, moving inside to work it onto his right foot before curling his strike from the edge towards the top-right corner. However, his effort is too close to Pickford, who pushes it away.

Everton vs Brentford

19:06

Substitution Christian Thers Nørgaard Yehor Yarmoliuk

Everton vs Brentford

19:05

Substitution Sergio Reguilón Rodríguez Kevin Schade

Everton vs Brentford

19:02

Tarkowski tried to stop a Brentford attack by kicking another ball onto the pitch and is shown a yellow card. He isn’t happy, but it’s a clear booking.

Everton vs Brentford

19:02

The Brentford substitutes combine as Damsgaard and Lewis-Potter work together in a tight space on the left next to Everton’s box. Reguilon then collects it and wants to get a shot away, but he is forced back before Nørgaard’s cross is headed away by Young.

Everton vs Brentford

18:59

Everton have shown some serious defensive might against Brentford and are now allowing them to create a clear opportunity to score. Branthwaite and Tarkowski have kept Toney quiet for most of the contest and are getting closer to securing their fourth successive home clean sheet.

Everton vs Brentford

18:56

Substitution Yoane Wissa Bileko Keane William Lewis-Potter

Everton vs Brentford

18:55

WIDE! McNeil goes close to doubling Everton’s lead! Branthwaite stays up the pitch from a set-piece and flicks a header down the left to McNeil, who races into the box before driving his low effort across the goal and wide of the right post.

Everton vs Brentford

18:55

Substitution Vitaly Janelt Mikkel Krogh Damsgaard

Everton vs Brentford

18:54

There is a really good feeling around Goodison Park, as the hosts know that a win would be enough to ensure their Premier League survival. After battling to stay up until the final day last season, Dyche would be delighted to get it done with three games remaining.

Everton vs Brentford

18:51

There was a nervous wait around Goodison Park after Gueye scored, with VAR checking the goal for two offsides. However, it stands, with Gueye giving the lead for the Toffees for the third time this season!

Everton vs Brentford

18:48

Goal Idrissa Gana Gueye

Everton vs Brentford

18:48

Garner slides a ball down the right to Godfrey, who flashes a first-time cross towards the back post. Collins could let it go behind but flicks it out for a corner.

Everton vs Brentford

18:47

McNeil’s outswinging corner from the left is headed away as far as Harrison, whose first-time volley rebounds out to Young on the edge of the box. The full-back then attempts to lift the ball back into a dangerous area but sends it straight out for a goal-kick.

Everton vs Brentford

18:45

Wissa and Harrison chase after the ball in Brentford’s half next to the right corner flag, with the Bees forward going through the back of the winger to give away a needless free-kick. McNeil then whips a cross towards the back post, with Flekken getting his hand on it to flick it behind.

Everton vs Brentford

18:43

BAR! McNeil rolls the ball out to Garner on the right before the midfielder gives it straight back to him just outside the box. The winger has time to get a shot away and blasts his left-footed effort towards the goal, with it swerving away from Flekken before thundering against the bar!

Everton vs Brentford

18:41

Brentford have won their last two Premier League games, as many as they had in their previous 18 combined (drawing four and losing 12). They last won three in a row in October-November. They just had the best chance of the match through Toney, but he couldn’t beat Pickford for his first Premier League goal since February!

Everton vs Brentford

18:39

WHAT A SAVE! That’s a fantastic stop from Pickford! Wissa flicks a wonderful pass down the right to Jensen, who surges down the right before curling a low cross into Toney. He attempts to drive a first-time shot past Pickford at close range, but the goalkeeper makes himself big to make an impressive save.

Everton vs Brentford

18:38

Jensen rolls the ball out to the right and into Mbeumo before rushing down the right looking for the return. However, Mbeumo holds onto it before his chipped cross into the box is cleared away.

Everton vs Brentford

18:36

There shouldn’t be much of a shock that the first half ended goalless, with Everton stopping their opponent from scoring in the opening 45 minutes on 23 occasions (more than any other side). Additionally, the Toffees haven’t scored in 23 outings in the first half. The Goodison Park crowd will be hoping for an entertaining contest after the restart.

Everton vs Brentford

18:33

Brentford get the ball rolling. Frank will want to see more from his attacking trio of Wissa, Toney and Mbeumo in the second half.

Everton vs Brentford

18:28

Everton had a massive 12 shots in the first half but didn’t hit the target with any of them, creating an xG of 0.63. Eight of their efforts did come inside the box, with Brentford doing brilliantly to block their strikes before the ball could reach Flekken. McNeil has been the Toffees’ brightest spark and had made three key passes, but Chermiti has also been good, with the forward making some impactful runs. As for Brentford, they only created an xG of 0.2 with their four efforts. Toney might have had 19 touches, but he has struggled to get involved in the attack and has often dropped deep to get involved with the play.

Everton vs Brentford

18:23

Everton and Brentford failed to have a shot on target in a first half that ended goalless at Goodison Park. McNeil went close with a cross-shot early on, but his strike from the left side of the box evaded Chermiti and went just wide of the right post. Brentford’s best chance of the half came after a wonderful touch and cutback from Janelt, with Jensen ignoring Toney to his right before seeing his shot from close range get blocked by Branthwaite. Chermiti then had a first-time effort stopped by Collins before he looked to assist Doucoure with a clever layoff near the end of the first half, but the midfielder’s wild volley went well wide of the left post.

Everton vs Brentford

18:19

HALF-TIME: EVERTON 0-0 BRENTFORD

Everton vs Brentford

18:19

McNeil has possession on the left towards Chermiti, but Pinnock gets there ahead of the forward to clear the ball away as far as Harrison, who lashes his volley wide of the left post.

Everton vs Brentford

18:17

There will be two minutes of additional time.

Everton vs Brentford

18:17

WIDE! Doucoure has Everton’s biggest chance so far! Chermiti shows some quick thinking to flick the ball towards Doucoure, who gets down the left side of the box before volleying his left-footed effort well wide of the left post.

Everton vs Brentford

18:16

Mbeumo jumps for the ball but is sandwiched by Young and Tarkowski. He stays down but will be able to continue.

Everton vs Brentford

18:14

Yellow Card Sergio Reguilón Rodríguez

Everton vs Brentford

18:14

BLOCK! Doucoure, Harrison and McNeil combine as Everton move from right to left outside Brentford’s box. McNeil then looks for the return to Harrison and rolls his pass down the left to the Leeds loanee, but his effort deflects behind off Collins.

Everton vs Brentford

18:11

Chermiti is back on his feet and looks fine to continue, which will certainly be a boost to Everton, as the forward has looked bright so far on his first start.

Everton vs Brentford

18:09

Chermiti dives into a tackle with Janelt and goes through the back of the Brentford man. He stays down and looks hurt.

Everton vs Brentford

18:09

BLOCK! Garner lifts a pass towards Doucoure on the edge of the box, with the midfielder setting the ball back to Chermiti. The forward takes a first-time shot with his right foot, but Collins makes an important block.

Everton vs Brentford

18:07

McNeil gifts possession to Reguilon on the left before quickly winning it back. He then curls a left-footed cross towards Godfrey, but he heads his effort wide of the right post under pressure.

Everton vs Brentford

18:06

Ashley Young is the 20th different outfielder to reach 450 Premier League appearances. He was embroiled in a dramatic contest against Nottingham Forest last week and could have easily conceded a penalty, but has done well so far.

Everton vs Brentford

18:04

Everton have another little spell in possession and are passing it around the outskirts of Brentford’s box, but their attack ends when Gueye plays the ball straight to Toney. Mbeumo then looks to turn away on the counter. However, he is fouled by Young.

Everton vs Brentford

18:02

Over 30 minutes have been played, but there is yet to be a shot on target from either side. It has been a contest of two contracting styles, with Everton going for a direct approach, whereas Brentford have looked to keep the ball on the floor on most occasions.

Everton vs Brentford

18:01

Godfrey lifts the ball over the top of Brentford’s defence, with Chermiti getting into a race with Pinnock and winning a corner. McNeil aims for the back post with his inswinging cross, but Pinnock leaps the highest to head it out.

Everton vs Brentford

17:59

Everton have a rare spell of extended possession after Chermiti does well to knock a header back to McNeil. The Toffees switch the ball over to the right, but Godfrey’s lofted cross is easily collected by Flekken.

Everton vs Brentford

17:57

Toney drifts over to the left and drives a cross towards Wissa in the middle, but Branthwaite comfortably gets across to head it back towards the forward and out for a throw-in. If the ball into the box was the other way around, Toney would have been able to challenge the defender.

Everton vs Brentford

17:54

Having been unbeaten in their first three Premier League games against Everton (winning two and drawing one), Brentford have now lost their last two against the Toffees. They have edged the chances so far in a contest that has struggled to get going, creating an xG (expected goals) of 0.17 compared to Everton’s 0.07.

Everton vs Brentford

17:53

Brentford continue to put the pressure on Everton’s defence, with Ajer collecting the ball on the right before whipping a low, inviting cross into the box. It takes a slight defection on the way through, with Tarkowski poking it away just ahead of Pickford.

Everton vs Brentford

17:52

CHANCE! What an opportunity for Brentford! Reguilon lifts the ball down the left side of the box to Janelt, who takes a wonderful touch before cutting it back to Jensen. He then gets a shot away at close range, but Branthwaite makes a huge block. Toney is unhappy as he was free to his right.

Everton vs Brentford

17:50

Toney has been the quietest of Brentford’s three attackers and has had just three touches. The forward keeps looking to drop deep to get involved with the play, often moving into the Bees’ half.

Everton vs Brentford

17:49

Ajer has been bright in the opening exchanges, with the right-back curling another accurate pass down the right. This time Wissa gets on the end of it, and he drives a cross into the box, but Godfrey does just enough to clear it away at the back post.

Everton vs Brentford

17:47

Everton want to put Brentford under pressure at every opportunity and are launching direct balls forward, with Tarkowski looking to find McNeil this time. He bursts in from the left, but Collins wrestles him away from it, allowing Flekken to collect it.

Everton vs Brentford

17:45

Collins wins a corner out of nothing for Brentford after his switch of play is headed behind by Godfrey, who was put under pressure by Wissa. However, Tarkowski clears the initial danger before his centre-back partner Branthwaite heads away the second cross.

Everton vs Brentford

17:44

Garner wins possession in the midfield, striding from right to left. He combines with Doucoure before whipping a cross towards the back post with his right foot, but Reguilon gets there ahead of Harrison to head it away.

Everton vs Brentford

17:42

Pinnock strolls forward with possession and spots Wissa’s bursting run inside from the left. He gets behind Everton’s defence and gets into a race for the ball with Pickford, but the goalkeeper gets there first. He rushes off his line and heads away the danger before the flag goes up for offside.

Everton vs Brentford

17:40

None of the 10 league meetings between Everton and Brentford at Goodison Park have ended in a draw, with the Toffees winning seven of these to the Bees’ three. There have been chances at either end in the opening exchanges, but neither side have been able to take control. However, Frank will be confident with Wissa, Toney and Mbeumo all starting, in what is probably his first-choice attack.

Everton vs Brentford

17:38

CHANCE! A searching cross from right to left drops to McNeil on the left side of the box, who takes a good touch out of his feet before drilling his shot across the goal. Chermiti dives across to try and tap it in at close range, but the ball goes just past him and out for a goal-kick.

Everton vs Brentford

17:37

Jensen’s outswinging corner from the right finds Pinnock, who pokes his effort towards the goal. Godfrey thumps it away at the back post, and it hits Doucoure. The Bees want a penalty, but it hit the midfielder’s head.

Everton vs Brentford

17:36

Ajer curls the ball down the right wing, with Jensen getting into a battle with Branthwaite. The Everton centre-back seems to get the better of the Brentford man, but his pass back to Pickford goes out for a corner.

Everton vs Brentford

17:34

Pickford launches the ball up the pitch and gives Chermiti something to chase after. Pinnock gets there ahead of the forward, but Chermiti puts him under pressure and forces the defender to clear it out for a throw-in.

Everton vs Brentford

17:32

Chermiti has had to be patient, but he has finally been given his first start in the Premier League after making 14 appearances off the bench. The 19-year-old has only played 70 minutes in the top flight but comes in up front with Beto and Calvert-Lewin both out!

Everton vs Brentford

17:31

Everton get this Premier League clash under way. Can they secure their fourth successive win at Goodison Park?

Everton vs Brentford

17:28

Everton are looking to complete just their second ever league double over Brentford, previously doing so in the 1952-53 second division. Both teams are on the pitch and are ready to get started.

Everton vs Brentford

17:18

Brentford make two alterations to the side that thrashed Luton 5-1 in their last match. Toney starts up front after returning from a hip injury and comes in for Lewis-Potter, with Norgaard replacing Damsgaard in the midfield.

Everton vs Brentford

17:13

Everton make two changes to the side that beat Liverpool 2-0 in the Merseyside derby in their previous Premier League outing. Calvert-Lewin and Vitalii Mykolenko are out of the squad through injury, with Young coming in at left-back and Chermiti making his first league start up front.

Everton vs Brentford

Everton vs Brentford

17:02

Brentford are also going through a good spell of form and are unbeaten in their last five Premier League matches. Thomas Frank’s side collected three respectable draws against Manchester United, Brighton and Aston Villa before back-to-back wins over Sheffield United and Luton Town eased any fears of the Bees getting dragged into a relegation battle. Brentford’s 5-1 victory over the Hatters was the biggest away triumph in their history, with their crucial win putting them 10 points clear of the drop zone. Another success would seal safety, and they will be out for revenge after losing the reverse fixture 3-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Abdoulaye Doucoure, James Tarkowski and Calvert-Lewin with the goals for Everton.

Everton vs Brentford

17:00

Everton have boosted their chances of staying in the Premier League massively with three wins in their previous four outings to extend the gap between themselves and the relegation zone to eight points. The Toffees latest win was the sweetest, with Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring to help the hosts beat rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, securing their first home triumph against the Reds since October 2010. Manager Sean Dyche has led his side to three straight home wins without conceding a single goal, knowing that a fourth successive success at Goodison Park would see them move above Brentford and into 15th position. Everton will also be looking at their upcoming run favourably, with games against Luton Town and Sheffield United next after their contest against the Bees.
