Everton pair argue as frustrations threaten to boil over at Brentford

Everton’s dreadful run stretched to seven games without a win as the Toffees fell to a 1-0 defeat at Brentford.

Ivan Toney’s first half penalty was enough to hand Rafa Benitez’s side their sixth Premier League defeat of the season.

Naturally, it led to arguments, frustration and plenty of fume.

Here are some moments you may have missed from the match:

On-field argument

Everton were particularly poor in the first half, with Brentford being able to take advantage of what seemed to be nervous and sloppy play from the visitors.

They took the lead thanks to a few mistakes at the back leading to a penalty, and nearly extended that advantage on multiple occasions before the interval.

RATINGS: ‘Gave the ball away too easy’ two Everton players ranked abysmal at Brentford

One such chance saw an attacker run almost directly through the centre of the Everton defence before Jordan Pickford was forced into a save, and it was eventually scrambled away from goal and to relative safety.

Afterwards, Ben Godfrey and Abdoulaye Doucoure were left having strong words with each other on the edge of the Everton box.

The latter seemed to be more angrily making his point, as frustrations were already really starting to grow both on the pitch and in the section of away fans in the corner of the stadium.

X-rated supporter

Nothing summed up that anger more in the first half than the shout from one particular individual supporter.

The press box in the Brentford Community Stadium is situated at the opposite end of the ground to where the away fans view the match.

However, throughout the game they could collectively be heard – especially in the second period as they attempted to chant their side onto a better performance and hopefully getting back into this match.

In the first period though, one shout cut through.

In a period of relative silence among the rest of the crowd as the ball had gone out for a throw on the far side, one Evertonian in the away end shouted: “F****** s****!”

The expletives can of course not be published, but if that was in the first period goodness knows how that particular fan felt at full time.

Benitez fumes

Of course, it didn’t take long for the anger to spread to the touchline as well.

Throughout the game Rafa Benitez was patrolling the edge of his technical area, barking orders to his players and waving his arms in frustration at some of their failures.

But his anger really threatened to boil over with the referee thanks to one particular incident in the second half.

With Everton on an attack, Anthony Gordon was denied a free kick despite appearing to be felled a few yards outside the Brentford box.

The hosts launched a counter from that point and surged into the Blues half of the pitch, before Allan brought an end to their move with a tackle that was given as a foul.

Benitez instantly was on his feet and on the edge of the technical area shouting something in the direction of the official, who wasn’t interested in listening to the Blues manager’s queries.

Gray frustration

Demarai Gray was arguably Everton’s best outfield player on Sunday, despite only being introduced for the last 25 minutes of the match.

The winger was a doubt for the game after being substituted in the first half of his side’s recent loss to Man City at the Etihad, with an abductor injury initially feared to keep him on the sidelines for some time.

Thankfully the issue wasn’t as bad as that, although he was still not deemed fit enough to start at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Gray was dangerous when he came on, often peeling off to the right flank, despite playing centrally, to whip dangerous crosses into the box.

At one stage of the second period, though, he got himself into another strong position for a potential delivery into the area – hugging the touchline.

Rather than give the ball to him to attack the defence, Seamus Coleman opted to knock a cross-field pass over to the other flank which was very easily cut out.

Gray was left shouting towards his captain and waving his arms in despair as the ball floated through the air and straight onto a Brentford head.

That essentially summed up the whole game for the Blues.
