To regain lost ground in Odisha, Congress taps into former CM J B Patnaik’s legacy

The Congress in Odisha is trying to revive the legacy of former Chief Minister and party stalwart J B Patnaik by naming his son Pruthvi from the Begunia Assembly segment. On Sunday, the party announced 75 candidates for the Assembly polls scheduled for voting in four phases starting on May 13.

Pruthvi was named in the list despite having turned down a ticket in the 2019 polls and caused the Congress embarrassment. Sources said he expressed willingness to contest this time speaking to senior Congress leaders.

“I thank the Congress leadership for reposing faith in me and giving me a chance to contest from the seat, which was represented by my father, who had done a lot of development in Begunia. I have been trying to reunite the Congress cadres to give a tough fight in the coming polls,” said Pruthvi, who is set to make his electoral debut.

Nurtured by J B Patnaik, Begunia has a strong base of Congress supporters. The late three-time CM won the seat in the 1995 bypoll and again in 2004. In 2019, after Pruthvi refused to contest, the Congress fielded Pradeep Sahoo, who finished second to the BJD with 34.16% vote share. Sahoo is now the frontrunner to contest the seat for the ruling BJD.

Despite his influence in the Congress, Patnaik had not groomed his son for politics. Pruthvi is a businessman and social worker, and has been involved in the Congress’s organisation in Begunia for the past a few months. Pruthvi’s mother Jayanti was an MP and the first chairperson of National Commission for Women.
