EU Commission President: South Africa’s openness about the new corona variant has saved lives

South Africa has shown how international cooperation on health threats should work, according to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

South Africa’s handling of the emergence of a new corona variant has been exemplary. South Africa has saved many lives with its openness and good analytical work related to the omicron corona variant, von der Leyen believes.

In a speech on Monday, she thanked South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for his leadership.

“South Africa’s analytical work and openness in sharing results have been crucial for a rapid global response. It has undoubtedly saved many lives. And it is a model for how international cooperation should work when there are cross-border health threats,” von der Leyen said.

She gave the speech at the start of a three-day meeting in Geneva, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has initiated to discuss international pandemic management.

The European Commission was quick to respond to the threat posed by the new variant, which was discovered in southern Africa. On Friday, the EC announced that it would halt all air traffic from six South African countries.
