On May 9, the Estonian government terminated the agreement with Russia on education. The reason for this was the Kremlin’s aggression against Ukraine, informs Postimees.

Postimees writes that the termination of the agreement is linked to Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine, which constitutes a significant violation of international law, including the UN Charter.

It is also noted that this formally marks the end of cooperation in the field of education with Russia, which essentially ended two years ago.

Procedure for terminating the agreement

The agreement on cooperation in the field of education between Estonia and Russia was concluded in 1994. The agreement automatically extends for the next five years unless either party expresses a desire to terminate it. To terminate the agreement, the other party must be notified no later than six months before the end of the five-year term.

For this purpose, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will send the relevant notification to the other party, and the term of the agreement expires on November 19 of the current year.

Estonia and its relations with Russia

From the early days of the war, Estonia has been actively supporting Ukraine and calling for harsh sanctions against Russia. The government of this country is trying to limit its ties with the Kremlin.

Recently, President Alar Karis signed a law denouncing the treaty on legal assistance between Estonia and Russia.
