Erling Haaland is set to become the latest Premier League superstar to follow in the footsteps of his father – after Manchester City moved in on a stunning £51million transfer.

Although the 21-year-old is yet to be officially announced by City, he is on the brink of moving to the English top-flight – where his father Alf-Inge Haaland also played. During his time in English football, Haaland Snr represented Nottingham Forest, Leeds and City during the 1990s and early 2000s.

And now the Norwegian youngster is set to follow suit, after it emerged on Tuesday that Pep Guardiola's City have agreed a deal to sign the star striker from Borussia Dortmund. Here, Mirror Sport takes a look at some of the players who have previously achieved similar feats following their father's footsteps…

Peter and Kasper Schmeichel

Schmeichel Snr was a key member for Manchester United and then manager Sir Alex Ferguson during his eight year spell at Old Trafford between 1991 and 1999. During his time there, he added five Premier League titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup and a Champions League to his curriculum. He then had brief spells at Aston Villa and at the Etihad.

Meanwhile his son, Kasper also inherited his father's number one shirt for Denmark and began his career at City where he played between 2002 and 2009. After his move to Leicester City in 2011, he quickly became an integral member of the squad making over 400 appearances for the Foxes and swooping both Premier League and FA Cup titles.

Frank Lampard Sr and Frank Lampard Jr

Lampard Snr was part of West Ham's side that won the FA Cup in 1975 and 1980 during his 18-year spell with the Hammers. He then moved to National League side Southend United where he played for a season (1985/86) before announcing retirement at the age of 38.

His son, meanwhile, is the current manager of Everton and established himself as a Chelsea legend during his 13-year stay at Stamford Bridge – winning three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, Champions League and Europa League. Lampard also represented England internationally, during 15 years, earning 106 caps.

Ian Wright and Shaun and Bradley Wright-Phillips

Former England international Ian Wright was a huge success for Arsenal during his seven year spell (1991-1998) in north London – making just under 300 appearances for the Gunners and scoring over 180 goals. He won the Premier League, the League Cup, the FA Cup, the European Cup winners' Cup with the Gunners.

He also had spells with Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, West Ham, Celtic and Burnley. Meanwhile his son, Shaun had a nine-year connection with City across two different spells in 1999-2005 and 2008-2011.

His other son, Bradley had a two year stay with City in the Premier League before his move to Southampton, as they competed in the Championship.

Paul and Tom Ince

Ince Snr, who went by the nickname of 'Guvnor', became an inspirational character at Old Trafford; helping United to win the Premier League and the FA Cup twice, alongside the League and European Cup Winners Cups. He went on to represent Wolverhampton Wanderers for four seasons and making over 110 outings. He is currently the interim manager for Championship side Reading.

His son Tom, began his youth career at Liverpool and then went on to play in the Championship for Crystal Palace, Hull and Huddersfield. He is also at Reading playing under his father.

Jimmy and Nat Phillips

The former Bolton Wanderers defender Jimmy made over 300 appearances for the side during an 18-year stay. He played in the Football League Cup Final in 1995 as the Wanderers fell to a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool. The now 56-year-old later represented Rangers, Oxford United, Middlesbrough before a late return to Bolton in 1993, where he played for eight years before retiring.

Nat followed his father's footsteps in starting his career at the Wanderers where he stayed until 2016 before his move to Anfield. Having not had much success with the Reds, he was later loaned out to German outfit Stuttgart.

He has most recently helped Bournemouth to gain Premier League promotion during his season-long loan spell in the south coast. His contract with Liverpool is set to expire this summer.

Steve and Alex Bruce

Bruce captained United to their first league title in 25 years in 1993, contributing to two Premier League titles, two FA Cups, a League Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup during a nine-year spell with the Red Devils between 1987-1996. He later moved to Birmingham City for two seasons before retiring and later, became a manager.

His son Alex who is also a defender, played under his father at Blues and Hull. He is also a former Northern Ireland international, having made two appearances during 2013-14.

Alvin and David Martin

The former West Ham defender represented the Hammers for 22 years after beginning his youth career at the London side. Alvin made just under 500 appearances for the club, before spending a season at Leyton Orient and also earned 17 caps for England.

David meanwhile, had a similar path to his father's, he spent some of his youth career at West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur, before spells with Liverpool, Millwall, Leicester City, Leeds and Derby followed. He has been at the London Stadium since 2019.

After his debut in November of that year, Martin told Goal : “My dad didn't say much, I think we were both in tears! For my dad to play for the club for 21 years and see it and for me to make my debut, keep clean sheet and get the win for the boys, it is so pleasing.”
