Costa Coffee says 'we apologise' after making decision 'for final time'

The coffee chain, which has more than 2,000 cafes across the UK, will be shutting its Bruntsfield Place branch in Edinburgh at 5pm on Wednesday (Valentine’s Day). A Costa spokesperson said: “We can confirm that our Costa Coffee store on Bruntsfield Place will close its doors for trade on the 14th of February 2024.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Customers can continue to enjoy their favourite Costa coffee at our nearby store on Morningside Road.” Costa also noted that it “regularly reviews its stores and seeks opportunities to innovate”.

A full list of closures from the coffee giant in recent months have included, back in 2023, Coliseum retail park in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire on June 3 and Welch Way, Witney on June 5, as well as Wigan town centre – June 25, Five Rise Shopping Centre, Bingley – July 9 and High Street, Worcester – July (relocated September 15).

Other sites to shut included Lowestoft’s North Quay retail park – July 23 (refurbishment) and Church Street, Oakham – September 15 as well as West Bridgford, near Nottingham – September 22 and Commercial Street, Newport, Wales – October. The list was completed by Church Street in Malvern, near Worcestershire – November 17 and also Gatwick Airport South Terminal – November.

So far this year, in 2024, shops and cafes which have been shut by the coffee giant include the likes of Packhorse Road, Buckinghamshire – January 10 and King Street, Maidstone, Kent – January 20, as well as Chiswick High Road, London – February 6 and now Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh – February 14.
