Employers are not yet in favor of compulsory vaccination

Employers are not yet in favor of compulsory vaccination

For the time being, Dutch employers see little benefit in the introduction of compulsory vaccinations. They are strongly in favor of vaccinations against the corona virus, but an obligation such as Germany wants to introduce goes too far. A few expect, however undesirable, that an obligation is unavoidable.

Employer organizations VNO-NCW and MKB-Nederland say in a joint statement that it is important to increase the vaccination rate in the Netherlands. But according to the advocates, this can still be done in such a way that unvaccinated people voluntarily get a shot. “For the time being, we still see room for doing this with targeted actions, also in collaboration with the business community. There is still so much to gain.”

Employers’ association AWVN also states that in general it is not a great supporter of obligations, so also not for mandatory vaccination. “If it comes to that, then it should definitely be a last resort.”

Supermarkets strongly reject the suggestion that staff should be vaccinated, although they are in favor of vaccinations. “Supermarkets and food service companies are essential to provide the Netherlands with food and drink every day,” argues the umbrella organization Centraal Bureau Voedingshandel (CBL). “There can be no barrier to fulfilling this crucial role.”

Oil and gas company Shell, which has about 8,500 employees in the Netherlands, says it is a strong supporter of vaccinations because it can take the pressure off healthcare. “But we also recognize that people have freedom of choice,” the company said. “We follow the laws and regulations of the countries in which we operate and have no plans to make vaccinations mandatory in the Netherlands.”

Top man Steven van der Heijden of travel organization Corendon, with about 1000 employees in the Netherlands, thinks that a vaccination obligation is inevitable. “I think we are moving towards a vaccination obligation, or de facto a vaccination obligation, with which you impose so many restrictions on unvaccinated people that they have to,” he says. “That strikes me against my liberal chest, but I fear it is heading in that direction.”

According to the Corendon boss, new, more contagious variants of the virus leave no room for alternatives.” You now need a vaccination rate of almost 100 percent. You will not achieve that on a voluntary basis.”
