Since Steve Cohen took over as owner of the New York Mets, this has been a different approach to how they’ve operated in past offseasons.

With David Stearns running the baseball operations, he’s looking to overhaul this roster and not commit to long-term deals until they free up some of the money they are paying to players not currently on the roster.

This should allow the Mets to become heavy hitters in free agency following the 2024 season.

But until then, the front office still needs to field a team.

There have been some rumored targets, including a reunion with their former infielder Justin Turner and designated hitter J.D. Martinez who would help out their lineup, but really nothing major has occurred.

With time still remaining in the offseason, Bill Ladson of MLB.com thinks New York will continue to make trades and attempt to upgrade their bullpen.

“The Mets were never in the running for a top reliever like Josh Hader, so they most likely have to make additional trades to get better by Opening Day,” he writes.

In years past, they might have been in the running for Josh Hader.

They might have also been frontrunners to land reigning NL Cy Young winner Blake Snell, World Series champion Jordan Montgomery, former MVP Cody Bellinger and perennial Gold Glover Matt Chapman.

However, Stearns is not operating that way.

The Mets aren’t viewing themselves as contenders in 2024 and would like to keep spots open for their star prospects to debut and get Major League reps.

If they do make trades to upgrade their bullpen like Ladson is suggesting, it probably won’t be anything that would be considered a blockbuster deal.
