The United States are once again predicted to win the most medals overall at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with Team GB tipped to surpass 60 medals for the fourth successive summer Games.

With 100 days to go before the Olympic Games return to Europe, sports data firm Gracenote have released their latest virtual medal, with Great Britain placing third behind the USA, and fellow sporting powerhouses China.

Their forecast will be updated monthly, taking in available results data from key global and continental competitions since the last summer Games in Tokyo.

Who is predicted to win the most medals and most golds?

It will come as little surprise that the United States are forecast to win the most medals overall (123) once again at Paris, by quite some way.

China are predicted to place second on total medals, but will only be four golds fewer than the United States. A total of 89 medals would equal their tally from Tokyo three year ago.

Great Britain are also on track, according to predictions, to produce a similar medal performance level to the last Olympics, albeit the number of golds will be down.

While France should experience the usual advantageous bounce of being hosts, rising sharply in the medal table to fourth, and third behind the United States and China on gold meals.

Australia is expected to round out the top five with 50 medals, the most by the nation for 20 years since Athens 2004.

With athletes from Russia and Belarus banned from competing internationally in almost all Olympic sports since Feb 2022, due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it is harder to accurately predict how individuals selected to compete as Individual Neutral Athletes at Paris will fare in terms of medals. With only individuals allowed to compete as neutrals, and not any team events, medals won are expected to be limited.

Athletes from Ukraine have seen preparations for the Olympics severely disrupted due to the ongoing conflict, but are forecast to win three golds and 13 medals in total.

Team GB medal predictions for Paris

Team GB athletes are predicted to win 66 medals in total, maintaining their standing as a major contender since hosting in 2012. Success has been built on spreading the medals out across sports, and this is set to continue in Paris.

They are, however, predicted to drop down in the gold medal tally, with 13 golds, nine fewer than three years ago. Team GB’s best overseas tally is 67 at Rio 2016, with Paris predicted to return one medal fewer at 66, but two more than Tokyo.

Gracenote predicts individual gold medals for Bethany Shriever (BMX), Joe Clarke and Kimberley Woods (canoe slalom), Oliver Townend (equestrian), Joe Choong (modern pentathlon), Bradly Sinden (taekwondo) and Bryony Page (trampolining).

Other Olympic titles are expected in team events: the women’s team pursuit and Madison on the track, plus four rowing golds.

How many medals did Team GB win at the last Olympics?

Team GB won a total of 64 medals at the last Olympics in Tokyo, of which 22 were gold, 20 were silver and 22 were bronze.

Judoka Chelsie Giles won GB’s first medal of the Games with bronze while Britain’s swimmers enjoyed their most successful Olympics in history, with eight medals and four golds.

Sky Brown became Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist with skateboarding bronze while cyclist Dame Laura Kenny became the most decorated female British Olympian of all time with Madison gold.

It was the first time since 1996 that Great Britain failed to win an athletics gold medal. The men’s 4x100m relay team were pipped to gold by 0.01 seconds, although they were later stripped of silver after a failed doping test by CJ Ujah.

Who won the most medals at the 2020 Olympics?

The United States also topped the Olympics medal table at Tokyo 2020, winning 113 medals, of which 39 were gold, 41 were silver and 33 bronze. Swimmer Caeleb Dressel was the best medal performer for the USA with five golds in the pool. The country also set an Olympic record in Tokyo for winning medals across 29 different sports.

China placed second, 38 gold medals being one fewer than the USA, but 24 fewer medals overall. Hosts Japan were third, with Great Britain fourth.
