Emergency cabinet meeting called over domestic violence
Back home and further moves in Canberra today to end violence against women. The challenge, a top priority of a meeting between ministers, the federal government and police, live now to Canberra and politics reporter Amanda Kopp. Amanda, talk us through those discussions, Jane. Police ministers from every state and territory have been meeting with the Federal Attorney General, Mark Dreyfus this afternoon. They were also joined by the Australian Federal Police Commissioner, Reese Kershaw. It follows a $925 million investment from the federal government this week. For women fleeing violent relationships as well as tackling online abuse, this meeting focusing on the criminal justice system and how police and courts can better coordinate across state borders, it follows a horror year for women, with one woman dying at the hands of a man every four days in 2024 so far. Opening the meeting the attorney general says the nation wants Action comes at a time when the nation is united in demanding that political leaders act. There are no easy answers. It will take efforts across governments of all jurisdictions and all portfolios within those governments to work towards eliminating gendered violence. This is something that’s, as I think the Prime Minister said, is is bigger than government, bigger than anyone jurisdiction and if we can work together to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people who are really hurting, then that’s a good thing. While it’s not expected that there will be any solid announcements after today’s meeting, state leaders are expected to report back on their progress to national cabinet later this year. Jane, Amanda. Thank you.
