Ein Mann wurde im Krüger-Nationalplark in Südafrika von einem Elefanten getötet. Die Behörden gehen davon aus, dass es sich beim Getöteten um einen Wilderer handelt.

Im bekannten Krüger-Nationalpark in Südafrika ist ein mutmasslicher Wilderer von einem Elefanten zu Tode getrampelt worden. Die Leiche des Mannes sei während eines Einsatzes gegen die Wilderei gefunden worden, sagte Park-Sprecher Isaac Phaahla am Freitag. «Erste Untersuchungen lassen darauf schliessen, dass der Verstorbene von einem Elefanten getötet und von seinen Komplizen zurückgelassen wurde.»

Bei dem Angriff sei das Mobiltelefon des mutmasslichen Wilderers nicht zu Schaden gekommen, erklärte der Sprecher weiter. Dieses sei der Polizei übergeben worden, um die Beamten bei den Ermittlungen zu unterstützen.

Vor allem Nashörner werden häufig gejagt

Der Krüger-Nationalpark ist stark von Wilderei betroffen, insbesondere Nashörner werden dort häufig gejagt. Nach Angaben von Tierschützern ist die Nashorn-Population in dem Park in den vergangenen zehn Jahren um knapp 70 Prozent auf etwa 4000 Tiere gesunken.

Im vergangenen Jahr hatte der Park einen ähnlichen Fall gemeldet, damals war ein mutmasslicher Wilderer von Löwen getötet worden. Nur der Kopf des Mannes konnte drei Tage später gefunden werden. Die Komplizen des Verdächtigen hatten eine Notfall-Hotline angerufen, um ihn als vermisst zu melden.

Mit neuen Technologien und verstärkten Kontrollen gehen die Mitarbeiter des Parks vermehrt gegen Wilderer vor. In mehreren Fällen konnten Verdächtige aufgegriffen werden, bevor sie ein Tier töteten.
