Electric cars: Price of EVs puts people off switching from petrol and diesel, poll finds

Asia's Tech News Daily

The cost of electric vehicles is the biggest factor putting people off switching from petrol and diesel, exclusive polling for i has revealed.

According to the survey, conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, 46 per cent of respondents said they were unlikely to buy an electric car in the next three years.

Of those who had no plans to buy an electric car, 43 per cent said it was because electric cars are too expensive – despite the Government’s £2,500 Plug-in Car Grant that aims to encourage motorists to ditch polluting vehicles.

The scheme, which was slashed by £500 in April, reduces the price of vehicles with zero CO2 emissions that retail for less than £35,000.

But 52 per cent of those who said they would not buy an electric car that was because they were unlikely to purchase any car within the next three years.

Other concerns were lack of charging services and worries about battery life.

Overall, 46 per cent of people believed the main impediment to more people buying electric cars was that they are too expensive, whereas 26 per cent said it was a lack of charging stations.

In the Government’s Net Zero Strategy, published last week, a further £620m of funding was announced to support the transition to electric vehicles (EV).

The cash injection will mainly focus on local on-street residential charging, though some of the money will be spent on the grants.

The document did not state whether the Government will commit to maintaining the current £2,500 Plug-in grant, as reports suggest the Chancellor wants it to be cut even further.

Rishi Sunak wants to channel funds into electric charging infrastructure and other vehicles, such as taxis and vans, instead, according to The Telegraph.

This stance has left him at odds with both Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, and Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, who both oppose the cut.

Any changes to the EV grant could be announced in the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget this week or in the EV infrastructure strategy that is due to be published later this year.

Other findings from the polling found that 66 per cent of Britons are either “very concerned” or “moderately concerned” about climate change, while 10 per cent said they are “not at all concerned”.

Redfield & Wilton Strategies surveyed 1,500 people on 20 October.

Earlier in the week the Government said UK households will be offered £5,000 to replace gas boilers with low-carbon technologies such as electric heat pumps.
