Maxis and Huawei trials 5.5G at KLCC, with speeds of over 8Gbps

Maxis and Huawei have kicked off Malaysia’s first-ever 5G-Advanced technology trial at KLCC. 5G Advanced, also referred to as 5.5G, promises to offer 10 times faster speeds than current 5G as well as 10 times more connected devices and a much lower latency for more demanding real-time applications.

During the 5.5G trial setup at KLCC, Maxis and Huawei have demonstrated the 5G-Advanced’s capabilities to deliver an ultra-high speed of over 8Gbps. The event was officiated by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din.

The 5.5G showcase at Suria KLCC park features several 5.5G use cases which require ultra-high bandwidth, and millisecond latency. Some of the demos include real-time high-resolution video streaming with AR layering as well as live 3D video streaming via stereoscopic displays which enables 3D experiences without the need for extra glasses.

5.5G also enables even more connected IoT devices within the same footprint. To bring down costs and power consumption of smart devices, 5.5G also enables RedCap (Reduced Capability) devices which enables connectivity for wearables and various embedded devices at a lower cost and improved power efficiency in a much smaller form factor. There are also passive IoT devices which are connected without any use of batteries, which enables greater longevity and reduced maintenance for these smart devices.

The 5.5G technology showcase will be on display only for two days – 22nd and 23rd February 2024 from 10am to 10pm. After this, the demonstration will then be moved to the global stage next week at the Malaysia Pavilion at Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona.

Commenting on the 5.5G showcase, Maxis CEO Goh Seow Eng said, “Maxis is proud to have achieved a first not only for the nation but also in Southeast Asia with our 5.5G trial. The potential of this technology is immense as it can power intelligent solutions across industries and economies. We look forward to exploring this technology and developing solutions that will benefit industries and enterprises, and advance our nation’s digital ambition.”

Meanwhile, Huawei Technologies Malaysia CEO Simon Sun said, “As a leading global ICT player and an advocate for end-to-end 5.5G solutions, Huawei has been working on R&D and verification of key 5.5G technologies and business cases. Today, we bring the latest 5.5G technology and launch the first 5.5G showcase in Malaysia. This will show the world that Malaysia leads the region in digital infrastructure, proving its enabling environment and digital facilities are one of the best to attract and retain foreign investments. Huawei Malaysia is firmly committed to walking alongside the nation in its digital transformation journey.”
