El yen japonés cayó a su valor más bajo en 34 años

El yen rebasó este lunes la barrera psicológica de las 160 unidades por dólar, un nuevo mínimo desde abril de 1990, después de que el Banco de Japón (BoJ) optara por el inmovilismo en su última reunión mensual.

La moneda japonesa rondaba el rango superior de los 155 antes de que el BoJ anunciara su decisión el viernes, pero durante el fin de semana la divisa llegó a sobrepasar la barrera de los 158 y este lunes por la mañana, la de los 159 y 160, incrementando los rumores sobre una posible intervención por parte del Ejecutivo para frenar la caída.

Durante la mañana en Tokio, el yen se intercambiaba en 157,78-160,21 por dólar, en comparación con los 156,70-71 del viernes por la noche en Tokio.

Esta renovada caída se produjo después de que el BoJ optara el viernes pasado por mantener inalteradas las principales medidas de su política monetaria tras el giro emprendido el mes anterior, cuando subió los tipos de interés de referencia a corto plazo hasta el 0,1%, en su primera alza de tasas en 17 años.

La entidad crediticia japonesa optó nuevamente por el inmovilismo en su cuarta reunión de 2024, manteniendo los tipos de referencia en el 0,1%, y después de que se produjeran las negociaciones salariales y estas mejoraran la confianza de que el país asiático puede lograr una inflación estable.

El gobernador del BoJ, Kazuo Ueda, ha apuntado en comentarios recientes que considerará un cambio de política si el impacto de la debilidad del yen sobre la inflación “no puede ignorarse”.

Un yen débil beneficia a la facturación en el extranjero de las empresas japonesas, que ven infladas sus remesas al repatriarlas y mejora la competitividad de sus productos, pero también repercute negativamente en las cuentas nacionales al encarecer las importaciones en un país altamente dependiente de ellas.

Esta debilidad de la divisa japonesa se viene asociando con la divergencia de políticas entre el BoJ y el resto de bancos centrales en Europa y Estados Unidos. Si bien el BoJ optó por subir los tipos en marzo, la tasa sigue lejos de las de otras entidades.
