The entrance of Lewtrenchard Manor
An award-winning hotel has sadly confirmed its permanent closure. Lewtrenchard Manor, located in Lewdown on Dartmoor, is a prestigious family-run hotel not far from the Cornwall border.
The hotel’s website is no longer accepting bookings and a spokesperson has confirmed the permanent closure. More details about the reasons for the closure and job losses are expected to be shared in due course.
Owned and operated by the Murray Family, Lewtrenchard Manor was awarded the Cesar award from the Good Hotel Guide 2021, being named Romantic Hotel of the Year. Just three days ago, the hotel’s website described it as “the perfect setting for small meetings and conferences.” It is also renowned as a luxury wedding venue.
The manor boasts a celebrated restaurant and was included in the AA Restaurant Guide 2023. Room prices start at £214 a night.
Dating back to the 1600s, the building is surrounded by extensive grounds popular with walkers and beautiful shrub-filled gardens. It is located just a few miles off the A30.
The closure of the hotel is a significant loss to the local economy and the hospitality industry in this predominantly rural area.
A message on social media highlighted the impact on staff: “Can we all have some consideration for the staff that this has affected. Some of us have lost our jobs and livelihoods.”
