Anemia is defined as a deficiency in the levels of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells (or red blood cells) that helps carry oxygen throughout the body. The production of red blood cells is controlled by a hormone, erythropoietin, produced by the kidney, which is deficient in patients with chronic kidney disease. Renal patients are periodically screened for anemia, and this is more important in dialysis patients, as kidney function is worse, with shorter intervals between tests. Such patients may receive intravenous iron replacement or erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (erythropoietin-like agents) as needed.

Anemia is decreased hemoglobin less than 11 gm% in red blood cells. Kidneys produce a substance called erythropoietin which is required for the production of red blood cells(RBS). In CKD the production of erythropoietin is decreased resulting in decreased production of RBCs thus causing anemia. It may be treated with erythropoietin supplementation based on the severity of anemia.

Anemia is a condition of the body where oxygen capacity of blood is decreased or hemoglobin is decreased. Drugs called erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs) are administered, which will help regulate the iron content in the blood.
