Malayalam cinema’s latest release Manjummel boys, is well on its way to become a superhit, as the film has earned Rs 40 crore worldwide right in its first week. Directed by Chidambaram S. Poduval, the film released in theaters on February 22, opening to positive reviews from film buffs and critics.

On the day of its release the film earned Rs 3.3 crore. Over the weekend, the film earned over Rs 8 crore, earning Rs 4.7 crore on Sunday alone. On day 6 the film has earned Rs 2.60 crore.

On Tuesday, day 6, Manjummel Boys displayed an occupancy of 38 percent. The night shows displayed an occupancy of 57 percent. The film has earned Rs 20 crore in India and Rs 40 crore worldwide.

Was Manjummel Boys Shot Inside A Cave?

Ever since the release of the film, people have been curious to know whether the film was shot in the 900-foot-deep Gunaa Cave. The film’s production designer, Ajayan Chalissery, revealed the answer in an interview with Manorama Online.

According to Ajayan, a replica of the Gunaa cave was set up in an abandoned godown in Perumbavoor, Kerala. He said “The Guna Cave is a highly restricted area, and the Forest Department was even hesitant to permit us to visit the place for reference. After a lot of persuasion, we finally got the approval to venture down the Guna Cave. The place is very unsafe. There is a scene in the movie where a lot of branches and other debris accumulate along with water. This is how the situation is there. We can’t be sure. We were given permission to go down 80 feet into the cave. We took photos of the cave to understand the texture and detailing. We also had to take the right measurements to ensure the cave looks real,” he said.

He further said “It took us nearly 3 months. To build the rock, we used fibre that we sourced from various locations in Kodaikanal. That is why you feel it is so original,”

The film is based on the life of a few friends who travel from Manjummel, Kochi, and decide to go on a vacation to Kodaikanal, where they visit the iconic Gunaa cave. During their visit, one of their friends falls into the steep region.

The film stars Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Khalid Rahman, Jean Paul Lal, and others in key roles.
