Eduardo Camavinga is yet to establish himself as a regular starter at Real Madrid | Denis Doyle/GettyImages
Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has admitted he doesn’t like being on the bench at the Santiago Bernabeu but is willing to wait for his opportunity in the first team.
The 20-year-old joined the La Liga champions on a six-year deal in August 2021, leaving Rennes after two sparkling seasons in Ligue 1.
Many expected Camavinga to hit the ground running at Real, but he’s been unable to command a regular starting role in a midfield stacked with quality options. He has instead been used as an impact substitute, particularly in the later stages of Champions League games.
In addition to Camavinga, manager Carlo Ancelotti has Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde at his disposal, while he previously had Casemiro to call upon before his summer transfer to Manchester United.
Now, speaking to Goal, Camavinga has admitted he’d like to start more games at Real, but is willing to wait for his chance because of the fierce competition for places.

“Of course I would like to play every game. There is a reality at Real Madrid: there are good players ahead of me,” the Frenchman said. “I can’t say I like it because being on the bench is not pleasant either. You have to be patient.
“Simply, with performances on the field that lead me to start. Being versatile is an advantage. When you are versatile, you have more possibilities to play because you can play in more positions.”
Camavinga, who started at left-back for France in their final World Cup Group D game against Tunisia, also revealed he feels his best position to be as a number six in front of the defence, but added that he’s willing to play wherever he’s required.
“You have to make yourself available to the group, there are managers who are there and it’s important that you stay in your place,” he continued. “Then I’ll play where the coach puts me.”
