Ebay UK sales boom in run up to Christmas as used items listings surge

Ebay (EBAY) UK saw a major surge in people listing preloved items on its platform ahead of the holiday season, as they look to even out their Black Friday spending.

Just under half a million people listed products to sell on eBay UK last week, ranging from appliances to mattresses, as they look to make more space at home and some extra cash.

The platform saw a 79% increase in listings over the Black Friday (26 November) weekend, with 10 new listings being posted every second. Sales of used items jumped 11% over the last week.

Murray Lambell, general manager of eBay UK said: “Shoppers are getting much savvier; not only are they on the lookout for a good deal, but they want to make more money to afford these deals. This ‘one in one out’ behaviour is really picking up on our marketplace and it’s a method that is better for both wallets and the planet.”

The most popular items selling on eBay over the busy shopping weekend were the Dyson V7 Animal Vacuum Cleaner and the Nintendo Switch (7974.T), as well as the new James Bond DVD.

Brits also bought sales of refurbished mattresses from Simba, Emma and Eve.

Ebay published the average selling prices of items Brits may have at home — an electric keyboard could go for an average selling price of £216 ($286), while selling a used ice cream maker could mean £33 in the pocket.

A scooter could fetch about £66 and a popcorn machine could go for £38. A used yoga mat could go for £14.

In the tech space, headphones could earn Brits £20 while used speakers could get them up to £100.

A report published last year said Brits could save a collective £4.3bn by switching to second-hand shopping, predicted shoppers were set to buy about 343 million items before the end of the 2020.
