Eastern suburbs cocaine crackdown: $50,000 in drugs seized, 17 charged

Asia's Tech News Daily

A taxi driver allegedly carrying 34 bags of cocaine in his vehicle is among 17 people charged with drug-related offences after a police blitz in Sydney’s eastern suburbs at the weekend.

Operation Express ran on Friday and Saturday nights, focused on targeting “crime and anti-social behaviour” in the area, as the city’s residents celebrated the first weekend since the lockdown ended.

Police seized $35,380 in cash and 94.2 grams of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $50,000.

Detective Superintendent Martin Fileman said police will maintain a “highly visible presence” and anyone who partakes in illicit activities should expect to be charged with serious offences.

“With the reopening of licensed venues and the weather warming up, we are expecting lots of people out and about in the eastern suburbs, so police will be out to make sure everyone stays safe,” he said.

A taxi driver was stopped on Greenoaks Avenue in Double Bay about 6pm on Friday. Police allegedly found $8800 cash and 34 bags of cocaine, totalling 20.9 grams, in the car’s centre console.

The 56-year-old man from Bankstown, in the city’s south-west, was arrested and taken to Waverley police station where he was charged with supplying a prohibited drug, possessing a prohibited drug and dealing with the proceeds of crime. He was granted police bail and is due to face Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court in December.

Another taxi was stopped on Shaw Street in Bondi just after 5pm on Saturday after police say they “noticed it travel a short distance between picking up and dropping off a passenger”.

After searching the vehicle and another passenger, 21, police allegedly found 27 bags of cocaine, totalling 17.7 grams, and $8040 cash. The Austral man was charged with supplying and possessing prohibited drugs and dealing with property suspected to be the proceeds of crime. He is due to face court in November.

On Griffith Avenue, a 24-year-old Matraville man was charged with drug offences and custody of a knife in a public place.

A 47-year-old male passenger from Bondi Junction was arrested on Saturday afternoon after police say they found nine bags of cocaine, totally 8 grams, and $3850 in cash. He was charged with supplying a prohibited drug and faced Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday. The man was refused bail and his case is due before Central Local Court on Wednesday.

A 36-year-old woman from St Marys was stopped while driving in Double Bay on Saturday night.

Police say they found a soft drink can with an alleged “false lid”, holding 15 bags of cocaine, and 20 bags of cocaine in a plastic container. The woman is due in court in December on drug charges.
