Early catering closure ensures comeback dinner boxes

Dinner boxes from star chefs and other restaurants are making a comeback, now that the catering industry has to close at 5 p.m. every day due to the corona measures. At Ron Gastrobar At Home by top chef Ron Blaauw, for example, it is significantly busier again. But it is also possible to order boxes with dishes that can be heated at home at a restaurant such as tapas chain La Cubanita.

In the first corona year, many initiatives around dinner boxes saw the light of day, including Blaauw’s. He offers online, among other things, spare ribs, chocolate fondue and an extensive rice table. That’s going well. Last summer, when restaurants were also open, it was a bit quieter. But the orders have picked up again, certainly since the last corona press conference of the cabinet.

Mathijs Heijting, the entrepreneur behind the Thuisuiteten.nl platform, says that the better restaurants in the Netherlands can generate millions in turnover with meal boxes. He works with dozens of establishments, including Encore by Simonis and Bar Brasserie Joris by chef Yvette Jasperse. In terms of orders, it is already five times as busy as a month ago. On a busy day, this can easily amount to thousands of meals.

Thuisuiteten.nl is also active in the business market. In its own words, Heijting also arranges for various supermarkets of Albert Heijn to put meals from various restaurants on the shelves. The entrepreneur also has his own production kitchen to help restaurants and can use hundreds of delivery people to deliver dinner boxes to people’s homes in style.

Cooklikeachef, which offers home dishes from star restaurants such as De Librije, has also seen a significant increase in the number of orders recently. And in various parts of the Netherlands it is now also possible to order from OostWestThuisBest.nl. That is the website behind the dinner boxes of, among others, La Cubanita and Proeflokaal Bregje. The platform wants to expand the number of delivery locations in the near future.

Catering owners Maarten Hinloopen and Dennis Dekkers, who head regional branches of Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN) in The Hague and the Nijmegen region, do qualify the importance of these initiatives. It is not for every catering business to set up a home delivery or takeaway concept. Dekkers says that restaurants can mainly keep people at work in this way, but it is impossible to absorb the loss of turnover from the early closure in this way.

In the meantime, restaurants and hotels are trying everything to get people to come to their business, for example by promoting lunches. Ron Blaauw also offers breakfast in one of his restaurants on some days. Top man Rob Hermans of Fletcher Hotels sees opportunities before Christmas in a combination of an overnight stay and then extensive brunch with the family. He does have the impression that people are still a bit hesitant about booking, because the government has not yet announced which corona measures will apply around December 25.
