PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has approved the Department of Education’s (DepEd) proposal to expand the conduct of limited face-to-face classes in areas under Alert Level 1 and 2, Malacañang said on Tuesday.
In his virtual press briefing, acting Palace spokesman Karlo Alexei Nograles said the President gave the green light after Education Secretary Leonor Briones presdented the recommendation on the “progressive expansion” of limited in-person classes on Monday.
“Yes, as presented by Secretary Briones, ang kanilang (their) recommendation to the President is to allow the DepEd, together with DoH (Department of Health) to expand face-to-face classes lalong-lalo na sa mga naka-Alert Level 2 (especially in areas under Alert Level 2), subject to number 1 support ng LGU (support of the LGU [local government unit), number 2 may pahintulot din po sa mga magulang and sa mga stakeholders ng pamahalaan (the permission of parents and stakeholders),” Nograles said when asked if Duterte approved the recommendation.
“So, with no objection, kumbaga walang objection si Pangulo doon (the President has no objections to that), and after the presentation in Secretary Briones, then tuloy-tuloy po nila ‘yung pag-aaral nila (they will continue to study it). Again, it will be the DepEd and DoH combined who will be assessing the expansion pilot implementation ng (of) face-to-face classes under DepEd,” he added.
In Duterte’s Talk to the People on Monday night, Briones said the expansion of face-to-face classes in areas under Alert Level 1 and 2 will start no earlier than the first week of February.
“So ang aming rekomendasyon, Mr. President, progressive expansion. Hindi ‘yung lahat-lahat sabay-sabay (Our recommendation, Mr. President, is progressive expansion — and not allowing everything all at the same time),” Briones said.
Briones said the DepEd recommends that only vaccinated teachers and non-teaching personnel be allowed to participate in the face-to-face classes.
Meanwhile, Briones said that vaccinated learners would be preferred as participants.
