Duke and Duchess of Sussex meet UN Secretary-General on final day of New York tour

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex leave the United Nations headquarter in New York after meeting Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex met the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Saturday as they attempt to put pressure on world leaders to share Covid-19 vaccines with the developing world.

The couple, who have designed their own de facto post-royal tour despite no longer having an official diplomatic role, met with Antonio Guterres at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Meghan later declared it a “lovely meeting”.

It is the latest in several meetings with politicians during their three-day visit to New York, a trip that has raised eyebrows amid courtiers and British diplomats.

Critics have questioned what or whom they are representing, with fans delighting in how doors at the highest level are still open to them.

The couple no longer represent the Queen overseas, having left the working Royal Family to pursue financial freedom in the US.

When they left, they promised to uphold her values, and continue to use their titles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in their work.

Mr Guterres also met Queen Maxima of the Netherlands on Thursday, in her role as special advocate for inclusive finance for development.

The Sussexes' trip has also seen Prince Harry – in his role as president of African parks – meet with the President of Angola, João Lourenço.

Both Duke and Duchess spent time with New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio during a visit to One World Trade Centre in their first appearance on Thursday.

On Saturday evening the Sussexes were due to appear on stage at a concert to promote vaccine equity, alongside musicians including Ed Sheeran, Sir Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Metallica and Coldplay who were scheduled to perform.

The 24-hour broadcast, Global Citizen Live, was staged in New York's Central Park and cities around the world.

Its campaign calls on G7 countries and the European Union to share at least one billion Covid-19 vaccine doses with those most in need and support calls for a waiver on vaccine intellectual property rights.

In May, the Duke received a standing ovation as he pleaded for vaccines to be “distributed to everyone, everywhere” at a similar star-studded charity concert in Los Angeles.

“We cannot rest or truly recover until there is fair distribution to every corner of the world,” he said. “Guys, the mission in front of us is not one we can afford to fail at.”
