The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for parts of New Jersey because of the potential for heavy snow and dangerous driving conditions.
Winter storm warnings have been issued for four counties in southern New Jersey as the state braces for a fast-moving winter storm that could drop up to 6 inches of snow in some areas and create slick road conditions overnight Friday into early Saturday.
The storm warnings go into effect at 10 p.m. Friday and run through 10 a.m. Saturday in Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem counties, the National Weather Service said. Every other county in the Garden State is under a winter weather advisory, with lighter snow accumulations expected but brief bursts of heavy snow possible.
“Untreated roads or paved surface may become slushy to snow covered, resulting in slippery to difficult travel conditions,” the weather service said in a storm update late Friday afternoon.
The weather service’s New York office, which covers the northeastern region of New Jersey, said visibility could be reduced as low as a half-mile to 1 mile at times, so drivers are likely to face “snow-covered roads and hazardous travel” late Friday night into Saturday morning.
Forecasters noted there’s a possibility the storm track could shift a bit farther north, which would bring slightly higher snow totals to northern New Jersey. As of now, the center of the storm is expected to move just south of New Jersey, which is why southern and central areas of the Garden State will likely get the highest snowfall totals.
