Drink spiking: nearly 200 incidents on nights out reported to UK police forces in last two months

Asia's Tech News Daily

Almost 200 incidents of drink spiking are confirmed to have been reported to UK forces over the last two two months, the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) has said.

In September and October, there have been 198 reports of drinking across the four nations, as well as 24 reports of some form of injection.

The revelation comes after the NPCC received data from more forces following announcing an initial figure of around 140 confirmed reports of drink spiking on Friday.

Alleged victims include both men and women, although the majority of cases feature young women, while the reported offences took place at licensed premises and private parties.

The new figure is based on data from 40 police forces, but the NPCC said it expected data from five more over the weekend.

Of the 198 reports, nearly 30 per cent – or 58 – were made to the Metropolitan Police.

Dept Ch Const Jason Harwin, the organisation’s lead for drugs, said: “Clearly these reports are very concerning.

“We are working at pace with forces, law enforcement agencies such as the NCA and other partners including the Home Office and universities to understand the scale of offending, establish any links between the allegations and ultimately bring any identified offenders to justice.”

Two teenage men, who were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to administer poison in connection with a spate of spiking incidents in Nottingham, have been released under investigation by Nottinghamshire police.

The arrests are not being linked to any specific allegation of spiking by a needle, or contamination of a drink.

Extra police officers will be on street patrol and outside venues in the city this weekend as they continue to investigate 15 incidents of young women being spiked with “something sharp” in the last month.

However, drugs experts have cast doubt on the frequency and extent of injection spiking taking place and have called for a renewed focus on drink spiking and sexual assault.
