RAIPUR: As the Sarv Adivasi Samaj called for a Bastar Bandh on January 23 in protest against the killing of a six-month-old child in an alleged indiscriminate firing by the police in Bijapur and tree felling in Hasdeo forests, the Communist Party of India (Maoists) has appealed to make the bandh a huge success and has extended the appeal to the Surguja region as well.
Similarly, the Krantikari Adivasi Mahila Sangathan has decided to boycott the celebrations for the consecration ceremony of Lord Ram’s idol at Ayodhya. Maoists have circulated pamphlets carrying the slogan ‘We Need Forest, Water, and Land, Not the Ram Temple.’
The core committee of Sarv Adivasi Samaj, Bastar division, in a press release, stated that they strongly condemn the killing of six-month-old Mangli in the alleged cross-firing between the Maoists and the forces in Bijapur recently. The committee also passed a resolution against tree felling in the Hasdeo forest of Surguja division, said Prakash Thakur, the divisional president of Sarv Adivasi Samaj. The Maoists issued a press release stating that Sodi Mangli, who was six months old, was killed in the firing on January 1, 2024, while her mother was injured.
The Maoists’ press release states that the police conducted indiscriminate firing in Mudvendi village of Bijapur, resulting in the child’s death, but the police claim it was a cross-firing. The villagers are continuously protesting to seek justice for the child. Mangli, the Maoist spokesperson for the North Sub-Zonal Bureau, Dandakaranya, has released a press note, making several allegations against both the state and central governments. In Hasdeo, more than 36,000 trees are being cut down, ostensibly to benefit corporate houses, he said in the press release.
Members of the Hasdeo Sangharsh Samiti were arrested earlier, and now trees are being cut under police protection, Mangli said. Despite strong opposition nationwide, the government is not considering abandoning the project. Mangli’s press note mentioned that the construction of the Ram Temple is not completed, and the consecration of the idol of Lord Ram is being done hastily to gain political mileage in the Lok Sabha elections. In the previous Lok Sabha elections, victory was achieved under the Pulwama conspiracy. Now, for winning the elections, the use of the Ram Temple is being emphasized, he claimed.
