Don't panic, no plans for lockdown in Karnataka: CM Bommai on Omicron threat

Don't panic, no plans for lockdown in Karnataka: CM Bommai on Omicron threat

The Karnataka government is not looking at any proposal for a statewide lockdown in the wake of the Omicron threat, CM Basavaraj Bommai said on Monday. First detected in Botswana, this variant of SARS-CoV-2 has been known to be “highly- transmissible” as per preliminary data.

Speaking to reporters in Davanagere, the chief minister of Karnataka said, “We have instructed for strict precautions at schools and colleges, but not to close them. There is no proposal to impose a lockdown,” Bommai said.

There is no need to panic about Omicron, CM Bommai appealed to the people of the state, adding that there must be strict adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour.

He added that anyone entering the state from countries where cases of the new variant have been confirmed is being subjected to thorough screening at airports.

Negative Covid-19 reports have been made mandatory for students from Kerala who are studying in Karnataka, the chief minister said. He went on to say that such students have been asked to undergo a second Covid-19 test seven days since the date of the first negative report.

The Karnataka government is in constant consultation with experts and the Union government and all precautions are being taken as per the Centre’s guidelines, CM Bommai said.

Asked about one individual with a travel history to South Africa reportedly showing symptoms of the new variant, the chief minister told reporters, “The test report of the person has been sent for genome sequencing. The exact variant of the virus would be known from the genome sequencing report.”

The Karnataka government, he said, is awaiting instructions from the Centre over the administration of booster doses of Covid-19 vaccines.

“Our concern is that it is already over six months since healthcare workers received two doses of the vaccine. We will act according to directions from the Centre,” said Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday informed Parliament that India is yet to report a confirmed case of the new variant. “Omicron variant has been found in 14 countries now. It is being studied here although it has not been reported in India,” he said.
