Don't look down! Blyde Canyon to build a ‘skywalk' – 700m in the air [pics]

Now, this is a test of your nerve and resolve. Tourism bosses in Mpumalanga have confirmed that a R500 million skywalk project is underway at the Blyde Canyon, giving visitors a chance to step out and overlook God’s Window.

Blyde Canyon skywalk project confirmed: Just how high are we talking, here?

The glass platform will extend 12 metres over a sheer drop, suspended about 700 metres in the air. The unique viewing experience is likely to spark a boom in the provincial tourism market, and it’s hoped that the worst of the pandemic will be done and dusted by the time this skywalk opens to the public.

Hundreds of jobs, many permanent, will be created by the ambitious development, situated in one of the most beautiful parts of our country. Blyde Canyon has previously been voted as one of the best destinations for ‘Instagrammable pictures’, and the addition of a skywalk will allow social media enthusiasts to get THE ultimate selfie.

Mpumalanga officials banking on skywalk attraction

Of course, tech aside, it is the natural beauty of Mpumalanga’s famous gorge that draws the tourists. The views are as good as unparalleled, and the desire to do something individual with this project will hopefully pay off. Premier RM Mtshweni-Tsipane has hailed the move as an ‘extraordinary example’ of what the province can achieve.

“The God’s Window Skywalk project is an extraordinary example of how our Province can utilize its resources such as its natural beauty, scenic landscapes, well-managed national parks, culture, the arts, and what is referred to as the creative economy, in order to create a better life for our people.” | Premier Mtshweni-Tsipane

Blyde Canyon walkway soars above competition

At 700m above the ground, the Blyde Canyon structure will comfortably beat the US’ Grand Canyon walkway for height – that only stands at 280m. Meanwhile, the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge in China is just 260m high. For the Mpumalanga tourism board, the sky is quite literally the limit – and they want to leave a real legacy for tourists and locals alike.

“The project involves the development of a glass walkway suspended off the edge of the cliff, to give tourists a 360-degree panoramic view, and is located within the proximity of the famous Graskop Gorge. It is envisaged that 300 job opportunities will be created during construction, while 100 of them will be permanent once the project is completed.”
