Don’t break the law, Saifuddin reminds public after suspected arson case

PUTRAJAYA: After a suspected arson case involving Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail advised Malaysians not to take actions that are against the law.

Saifuddin reminded Malaysians that “reckless actions” can lead to severe punishments.

“Reckless action without considering the due process of law is a serious offence that can lead to severe punishment,” said Saifuddin during a press conference at the Home Ministry on Wednesday (Jan 10).

Saifuddin also assured Malaysians that the police will thoroughly investigate the suspected arson case involving the DAP MP.

“We also reiterate that public safety is guaranteed because this is the number one commitment of the police,” added Saifuddin.

According to Saifuddin, the police were alerted to the fire at 2.55am on Wednesday (Jan 10), and after an emergency phone call, a team of six from the Fire Department was sent to the crime scene.

“They succeeded in controlling the fire,” said Saifuddin.

Saifuddin said that reports by the police showed that the fire completely damaged a car, while the other two vehicles on Ngeh’s porch had 30% burns.

“So far, there has been no loss of life, and the cars involved are registered under Ngeh’s name,” added Saifuddin.

Saifuddin also said preliminary reports by the police found a bottle suspected to be a Molotov cocktail at Ngeh’s house.

“Further investigations are being carried out by the police and the fire department’s forensics team to ascertain the motive of the incident and the suspects in the case,” said Saifuddin.

Saifuddin said the case is being classified under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire.

Meanwhile, Saifuddin urged Malaysians not to speculate on the matter, as it could disrupt ongoing police investigations.

“We reiterate that the police are committed to public safety,” added Saifuddin.
