By Kim Hyun-binAsiana Airlines and UNICEF have collected more than 15 billion won ($12.8 million) in inflight coin donations over the last 27 years. The donations were received through the airline’s “Change for good” campaign and will be used to send medical and relief supplies to children around the world.”Coins donated by passengers to the ‘Change for good’ campaign to help children in need over the past 27 years have totaled 15 billion won. We would like to thank those who have contributed to the cause,” Asiana Airlines said.Asiana Airlines CEO Jung Sung-kwon and UNICEF Korea Committee Secretary General Lee Ki-cheol held a commemorative ceremony at the carrier’s headquarters in Seoul, Thursday. The campaign collected foreign coins that could not be used in the country to help children in need and marks the first social contribution activity held by the airline. The campaign kicked off in 1994 and reached 1 billion won in 1998, 5 billion won in 2010, 10 billion won in 2014 and an accumulated 15 billion won in September of this year.”There were limitations as the coronavirus has drastically reduced the number of flights, but it is more meaningful that amid the COVID-19 period, we were able to reach 15 billion won. We would like to thank all the passengers who have contributed to the fund,” Jung said. “Asiana Airlines will recover from the coronavirus pandemic and work to contribute further to society,” he added.”We have worked with Asiana Airlines for 27 years to show love to children worldwide, and this project is the longest-running corporate sponsorship project for the UNICEF Korea Committee,” Lee said. “We ask for the company to continue their support to help children in need globally. We would also like to thank our employees, flight crew and donors for their support.
