San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ronnie Bell (10) celebrates after catching a touchdown pass against the Los Angeles Rams during the second quarter at Levi’s Stadium.
The San Francisco 49ers established themselves as a current model of consistency in today’s NFL, proven by three consecutive trips to the NFC Championship Game. But they still have a title dry spell that hasn’t ended.
Even during this impressive streak of NFC title contest appearances, the 49ers enter 2024 as the one who fell in Super Bowl 58. In forging ahead, let’s take a look at the NFC champs’ schedule for 2024 — including where their strength of schedule (SOS) ranks, our record prediction, and preview the biggest 49ers’ matchups of the season.
San Francisco 49ers Schedule and Opponents
We currently don’t know the exact ’24 schedule for each week regarding the 49ers, as the league announces every team’s slate in May. We will have to wait for the official NFL schedule release of the 2024 season to know when the 49ers take the field against these teams.
Home: Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, New York Jets, New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys
Away: Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
49ers’ Strength of Schedule
One look at the list of teams the 49ers will face already points to San Francisco facing a non-easy slate of games. But is it the toughest schedule ahead of 2024?
Based on PFN’s in-house metric, the 49ers fortunately won’t have the NFL’s hardest schedule. However, the Niners have the league’s 27th-easiest gauntlet of games.
San Francisco has eight games involving playoff teams from a year ago. These matchups are split in half as well — with four at Levi’s Stadium and the other half outside of the Bay Area. Some of their toughest games, fortunately, are in Santa Clara, Calif., … especially that NFC title game rematch against the Lions and Super Bowl reunion with the Chiefs.
49ers Record Prediction: 12-5
The 49ers’ win total for 2024 is set at 11.5 by DraftKings Sportsbook even with the fierce gauntlet of teams that awaits them.
San Francisco, though, returns most of its core players from its NFC title run as well as from the previous two conference championship appearances.
Names like Brock Purdy, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, and even aging veterans like Trent Williams are back. The defense gets one more year of splash 2022 free agent signing Javon Hargrave, returns Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, and welcomes back a healthier Talanoa Hufanga in the secondary.
The 49ers have built a roster capable of hitting the 11-win mark or higher under general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. But a major key for the Niners has been their ability to avoid a multitude of star player season-ending injuries during this run.
A 49ers team at full strength is one of the more dangerous teams in the league as recent seasons suggest. And once again, the Niners are anticipated to have their name mentioned in conversations for early Super Bowl 59 projections.
Biggest Matchups of the Year
Fans of the 49ers are used to seeing their team under the primetime lights with the schedule they play.
San Francisco once again has a gauntlet loaded with intriguing games. But fans will no doubt want to sell out Levi’s Stadium once ticket prices get announced for the Chiefs game.
It’s not just the K.C. game that brings mass appeal for the league and 49er fans ahead of next season. A large crowd is expected for the Lions home game. The Jets’ home game is another likely to have lots of significance. Along with longtime NFC rival Aaron Rodgers returning to Levi’s, this time as a Jet, former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh makes his first return to the Bay.

We also can’t ignore the reignited 49ers-Cowboys rivalry. Dallas will aim to redeem itself from the 42-10 debacle at the hands of the Niners last season when returning to Levi’s. As for the NFC West slate of games, the Rams were the only division team to beat S.F. — which was in a meaningless Week 18 game with both teams already having secured a playoff berth. Both are predicted to be in the fold for the division title once again.
The road contests feature two eye-grabbing interconference showdowns with the Bills and Dolphins. Both are expected to once again be in the mix for the AFC East title. But another notable road contest is the trip to the Twin Cities against the Vikings. Purdy delivered one of the worst nights of his career in the 2023 loss at U.S. Bank Stadium and will no doubt want to redeem himself.
