Tributes paid to Belfast firefighter (31) who died after months in coma

Tributes have been paid to a Belfast firefighter and father-of-one who died after months in a coma.

Kurtis Robinson, a 31-year-old who lived in Donaghadee, suffered a heart attack in October 2023 due to an issue with his kidneys.

The firefighter, who was based at Knock Fire Station, had been in hospital since then and died on February 25.

Husband to Natalie and father to one-year-old Benny, Kurtis was given days to live on January 13 and a Just Giving page to raise money to support his family has now raised over £24,000.

In tribute, a spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our esteemed colleague, firefighter Kurtis Robinson.

“Kurtis will be greatly missed by his colleagues in Knock Fire Station, those in Eastern Area Command and everyone at Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with Kurtis’ wife Natalie and son Benny, his family, friends and NIFRS colleagues.”

Kurtis died peacefully in hospital. His funeral service will take place at Beersbridge Elim Church on Saturday at noon and later to Roselawn Crematorium.

He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all the family circle, his death notice said.

Kurtis was a player at Portavogie Rangers FC, and a spokesperson for the club said they were “deeply saddened” by the news.

“We had been praying, without ceasing, since he became seriously unwell in October 2023,” they said on social media.

“Kurtis made 13 appearances for the club during his time at Portavogie Rangers FC but in that short time Kurtis made such an everlasting impact in the hearts of many.

“Kurtis was held in such high regard by everyone and his wonderful smile always lit up training nights and match days. Our thoughts and prayers continue to rise for Kurtis’ wife Natalie, his wee son Benny and all his family, friends and fire service colleagues.”
