Nationals Senate Leader Bridget McKenzie says Australians don’t want to use the US’ “broken system” for vehicle emission standards.
In 2025, new cars sold in Australia will be subject to tougher standards to drive emissions down and accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles.
“The US does not just subsidise industries, it subsidises the consumer as well,” she told Sky News Australia.
“If you talk to big behemoths like Ford, there’s a lot of EVs sitting on paddocks and car lots right now unable to be sold, we don’t want to take a broken system from the US to try and implement here.

“What we do want to see is a low emission transport sector going forward, we want it to be affordable – right now the government hasn’t’ got it right.”
