Yes, Philipp Max was quite disappointed with PSV’s draw against Real Sociedad in the group stage of the Europa League. ,,I’m disappointed, we played well, especially the first thirty minutes. But in the end we conceded the goals too easily,” said the German back.
Both goals came from a cross from the right side of Real Sociedad, while PSV had been warned about it beforehand. Max partly took care of himself, but also stated that ultimately the entire team should prevent such situations in the future. ,,I have to look back at the goals, I tried to keep the spaces in my back small. That was the most dangerous place at the time, so I was ultimately unable to block the cross. As a team, we have to solve that better in the future”, Max acknowledged.
We tried everything to make it 3-2 but missed that little bit extra to make the difference
He was especially satisfied with the second half of PSV, in which he and his teammates fought back from a 1-2 deficit. Cody Gakpo made the 2-2 soon after the break, on a pass from Mario Götze, who plays an all-important role this season. A big difference with the match against Granada last year, when Götze could only play 45 minutes, now ninety. Max: ,,That makes a lot of difference. We show that we improve ourselves anyway, we all work hard for it and also make a lot of dirty meters for each other. We are really on the right track.”

Something more with the brake on
Still, Max is a little less noticeable personally than in the previous season. He made a spectacular entrance after PSV bought him away from FC Augsburg and especially stood out with his attacking game and crosses. This season he is playing with the brakes a bit more. ,,In the preparation we discussed to opt for a little more security in some situations and to keep three defenders behind. Last season it sometimes happened that me and Denzel (Dumfries, ed.) were both gone. Remember, we played against strong teams this season.”
Like Real Sociedad for example, the No. 5 of La Liga last season. Max calls the team from the Basque Country ‘a top team with top players.’ ,,And yet we were the better, especially in the second half. We tried everything to make it 3-2, but just missed that little bit extra to make the difference. And in the end we were also lucky that Joel kept us going with a fantastic save. That would have been sour, yes.”
