Ronan O’Gara’s La Rochelle suffer dramatic, last-gasp defeat to Stormers
Champions Cup holders La Rochelle suffered an agonising defeat against the Stormers in Cape Town – their second successive loss of the tournament.
The champions went ahead in the 78th minute before seeing the victory slip away late on in controversial circumstances.
They thought they’d put the game out of the hosts’ reach but, despite seeing a conversion taken, the referee disallowed a late try for a head-on-head clash in the build-up, for which Joel Sclavi then received a yellow card.
There was time for a hugely dramatic finale; following a late Andre-Hugo Venter try for the Stormers, Manie Libbok converted to secure a thrilling 21-20 verdict.
