What is Masterworking in Diablo 4?
Masterworking is a new endgame system that allows players to improve their gear affixes by upgrading. It is designed to be a capstone to your gear evolution. This system works alongside the Tempering system to enable players to upgrade their gear with more precision and refined choices than before.
Masterworking is designed as a late endgame system, and as such, only Legendary and Unique items in Diablo 4 can be Masterworked.
How Masterworking Works in Diablo 4
Masterworking is done via the blacksmith, much like Tempering, and requires players to be in World Tier 4 to use it. Players can Masterwork their gear 12 times and only upgrade their affixes, not add new ones. Players use Tempering to add new ones, so the two systems work alongside each other.
With each upgrade, the gear’s affixes increase by 5%, with upgrades 4, 8, and 12 giving a massive 25% boost to one affix. If players are lucky, this boost can be applied to the same affixes multiple times. It also requires specific materials that can only be acquired through The Pit, an endgame system of multiple-tiered, timed challenges that players will need to complete to earn the necessary material.
These items are as follows, along with the upgrade brackets they are used for:
- Obducite: Rank 1-4
- Ingolith: Rank 5-8
- Neathiron: Rank 9-12

After fully Masterworking a piece of gear, players have the option to reset their Masterwork if they are unhappy with the rolls they receive. However, this will not refund their materials and will still be random for the major upgrades, so choose wisely before doing this.
This is just one of the many new additions, reworks, and quality-of-life improvements coming in Season of Loot Reborn. Thanks to the more refined itemization and progression for players to enjoy, the season looks to reinvigorate the game and its player base. Along with an upcoming expansion later this year, Diablo 4 looks to be on the right track for a successful, worthwhile year.
