Sin un periodismo libre, cualquier democracia entra en cuidados intensivos.

Hay que repetirlo hoy, y cuantas veces sea necesario: el periodismo está bajo acecho. La conmemoración del Día Mundial de la Libertad de Prensa debe servir para rechazar todo aquello que amenaza el oficio, abrir las puertas de la autocrítica y reafirmar la importancia de una prensa libre, vital para que brille la verdad. Todo lo anterior es esencial a fin de que cualquier democracia se fortalezca.P

En el ámbito local, la estigmatización contra medios y periodistas, que procede de diversos actores, pero especialmente del Gobierno Nacional y sectores afines, genera un clima de hostilidad contra quienes cumplen el deber de informar y denunciar. Han sido varias las alertas de la Fundación para la Libertad de Prensa en ese sentido. Así mismo, esta organización ha puesto en evidencia los ataques físicos que vienen de ambas orillas de la polarización. Mientras en un pronunciamiento exige que se respete a los medios estatales, en particular a RTVC, cuyos periodistas fueron objeto de agresiones en la marcha del 21 de abril, en otro dado a conocer el miércoles rechaza las agresiones que tres reporteros y un medio sufrieron durante las movilizaciones del Día del Trabajo. En un plano más global, los asesinatos de colegas –en Colombia este año ya van dos, mientras que en el 2023 en todo el mundo fueron 38–, las campañas de desinformación, los constantes ataques de distintos líderes con arraigo entre la gente y el acoso judicial son algunos de los nubarrones que se alzan sobre la profesión. Por todo ello, el llamado es a creer en el periodismo. Y a defenderlo. En Colombia, la Asociación de Medios de Información (AMI), junto con sus pares de la región, la SIP y WAN-IFRA, lanza hoy la iniciativa que lleva ese nombre: Creemos en el Periodismo. Comienza esta iniciativa, sobre todo a sabiendas de que se pueden tener diferencias y reparos frente a cómo se ejerce la labor, pero siempre con base en el mínimo común de que sin un periodismo libre al que se le garanticen sus derechos, cualquier democracia entra en cuidados intensivos.
