Una tienda de campaña con un mensaje de agradecimiento dedicado a los estudiantes estadounidenses en el campo de refugiados de Rafah, la Franja de Gaza.

La policía antidisturbios detuvo este sábado a un centenar de estudiantes que participaban en una acampada propalestina en la universidad Northeastern de Boston. El centro educativo aseguró en la red social X que las autoridades actuaron tras escuchar “violentos cantos antisemitas, entre ellos, ‘Matemos a los judíos”. Según ese comunicado, había entre los detenidos “profesionales infiltrados”, que no son alumnos de Northeastern. La escena, que fue descrita por la policía como “no conflictiva”, la completaron grupos de estudiantes que abuchearon desde la distancia la actuación de las autoridades.

Los manifestantes se enfrentan a acusaciones de allanamiento de morada y de alteración del orden público. Los detenidos, según la agencia AP, recibieron una advertencia de unos 15 minutos para dispersarse antes de ser arrestados.

Los altercados de este sábado en Boston se suman a las protestas estudiantiles contra la guerra de Israel en Gaza, que ha dejado ya unos 34.000 muertos, según el ministerio de Sanidad palestino, y al apoyo de la Administración de Joe Biden a la campaña militar del gobierno de Benjamin Netanyahu.

Se trata de las protestas estudiantiles más extendidas vividas en los campus universitarios estadounidenses desde la guerra de Vietnam, en los años sesenta. También indican que el apoyo de los jóvenes a Biden en las elecciones de noviembre puede verse mermado por los difíciles equilibrios de su política en Oriente Próximo.

Las manifestaciones en las universidades comenzaron poco después del ataque de Hamás en el sur de Israel que causó el 7 de octubre 1.200 muertos, y del inicio de la guerra de Gaza. Esas protestas se cobraron a finales del año pasado las dimisiones de las rectoras de las universidades de Harvard y de la de Pensilvania.

Esta nueva oleada vive su apogeo desde los incidentes registrados a principios de esta semana en el campus de Columbia en Nueva York. Ha encontrado una reacción mucho más severa de las autoridades, que se debaten entre garantizar la libertad de expresión y responder las quejas de los estudiantes y profesores judíos, aquellos que no participan en las protestas, que dicen no sentirse seguros.

En algunos casos, se han traducido en el traslado de la actividad lectiva al entorno virtual, al cierre de los recintos a cualquiera que no pueda acreditarse como alumno o a la cancelación de las celebraciones multitudinarias de graduación propias del final de curso.

La Universidad de Pensilvania tomó medidas similares a las de Northeastern este viernes.

Los manifestantes por todo el país exigen que las universidades corten sus vínculos financieros con Israel y desinviertan de empresas que, según ellos, están permitiendo la extensión el conflicto.

El grupo de estudiantes Huskies por una Palestina Libre rebatió la versión de la universidad Northeastern, diciendo en un comunicado que los contraprotestantes fueron los culpables de los insultos y que ningún estudiante “repitió ese repugnante discurso de odio.”

Los agentes del campus de la Universidad de Indiana y la policía estatal detuvieron el sábado, por su parte, a 23 personas en una acampada en el campus de Bloomington.

El viernes, el presidente interino de la Universidad de Pensilvania, J. Larry Jameson, pidió que se disolviera una acampada de manifestantes en el campus del oeste de Filadelfia, alegando que viola las políticas de instalaciones de la universidad, aunque unas 40 tiendas de campaña permanecían en su lugar el sábado por la mañana.

En la Universidad de Columbia, cuyos estudiantes han inspirado manifestaciones propalestinas en todo el país, los alumnos que representan el campamento dijeron el viernes que habían llegado a un punto muerto con los administradores y que tenían la intención de continuar su protesta.

Aunque la universidad ha fijado y retrasado repetidamente los plazos para la retirada del campamento, el viernes por la noche envió un correo electrónico a los estudiantes en el que les decía que volver a llamar a la policía “en este momento” sería contraproducente.

Las decisiones de llamar a las fuerzas del orden, que han provocado cientos de detenciones en todo el país, han llevado a miembros del profesorado de universidades de California, Georgia y Texas a iniciar o aprobar votaciones de desconfianza en sus dirigentes. Se trata en gran medida de reproches simbólicos, sin poder para destituir a sus presidentes.
