Ce lundi, une centaine d’étudiants de l’UGent ont débuté l’occupation d’un bâtiment de leur université. Ils demandent notamment à ce qu’elle rompe tous les liens qu’elle entretient avec les institutions israéliennes et qu’elle mette la durabilité au centre de toutes ses décisions budgétaires et éducatives.

L’UGent a décidé de ne pas suivre les demandes de ses étudiants, expliquant que l’université « ne ferait pas de généralités » pour toutes les institutions d’un pays. « Nous analysons nos partenaires individuellement » pour voir s’il y a ou pas implication dans de graves violations des droits de l’homme », a fait valoir le président du conseil d’administration de l’UGent, Geert Bourgeois, samedi. Il existe des universités israéliennes qui sont loin de ces pratiques «et il faut s’assurer de maintenir le contact », a-t-il conclu.

Leurs revendications n’étant pas entendues, les activistes ont l’intention d’occuper le bâtiment Ufo jusqu’à mercredi. Leur action est soutenue par plus de 100 employés de l’université, y compris des professeurs, qui ont adressé dimanche une lettre ouverte au conseil d’administration et au recteur Rik Van de Walle.

L’UGent n’a pas autorisé l’occupation, mais des accords ont été conclus avec les militants. Ils ne sont par exemple pas autorisés à déplacer les meubles ou à causer des dégâts au sein du bâtiment, ils doivent engager leurs propres stewards et en cas de violence, la police interviendra immédiatement. Les activistes ont apporté des tentes pour passer la nuit dans le bâtiment et ont installé des affiches sur lesquelles sont inscrits des slogans tels que « Stop the lies, cut all ties » (« Arrêtez les mensonges, rompez tous les liens »).
