Jake Odorizzi, a former Tampa Bay Rays starter, was released on Thursday by the Rays after two minor-league starts with Triple-A Durham.
The Tampa Bay Times reported the release.
Odorizzi re-signed with the Rays in March after missing all of the 2023 season due to an arthroscopic debridement procedure on his right shoulder. He spent all of 2023 on the Texas Rangers’ injured list and they released him after the season.
The Rays signed him in March, invited him to Major League spring training and then assigned him to Durham, where in two starts he went 0-2 with an 11.81 ERA as he threw 5.1 innings, giving up eight hits and seven runs. He struck out two and walked five.
It was a reunion of sorts for the 34-year-old right-hander, who pitched for Tampa Bay from 2013-17 and won at least 10 games for the Rays on three different occasions.
He is reportedly still interested in pitching this season.
Drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1st round of the 2008 MLB Draft, Odorizzi has 10 years of MLB experience since his debut in 2012 with the Kansas City Royals. He followed that with stints with Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Houston and Atlanta.
He made his only All-Star Game appearance in 2019 with Minnesota, where he had a career-high 15 wins. He’s 74-69 for his career with a 3.99 ERA.
Before his shoulder surgery he proved to be durable, making 30 or more starts in four different seasons, including twice with the Rays.
