Demolition of former primary school in Malden is probably canceled after all

The former building of primary school De Vuurvogel in Malden will probably not be demolished. According to the municipality of Heumen, both options, demolition or new construction, are still open. This is reported by the Gelderlander.

This spring it looked as though the building would have to fall to the ground anyway due to new construction. The council had decided this in April after no alternative location was found for the school building. A number of heritage organizations have since done their best to get the building on the list of municipal monuments. Buildings on that list are never demolished.

Cultural Heritage

According to the heritage organisations, Erfgoedplatform Heumen, the Bond Heemschut Gelderland and the Cuypersgenootschap, the school building is a special example of post-war cultural heritage. The school would also be the first Jenaplan school in the Netherlands.

Investigations on location

In the meantime, the municipality will continue with on-site investigations. This concerns various investigations that are mandatory under the Nature Conservation Act. An exploratory soil investigation and an exploratory archaeological investigation are both necessary, both for the demolition of the building and for conservation and redevelopment.
