DeMaurice Smith calls for ‘full accounting' of NFL investigation emails

Asia's Tech News Daily

If the NFL wants to halt the email leaks that already have brought down Jon Gruden, DeMaurice Smith says the league should just release all the messages it has.

The executive director of the players association once again pressured the league to show its cards from the investigation into the toxic culture of the Washington Football Team, an investigation that has had tentacles and implicated others.

“Our players deserve a full accounting of any other NFL misconduct, which is why we once again call for the league to release all of the emails from the Washington investigation,” Smith tweeted Friday night. “Any evidence or knowledge that this has been suppressed must be brought to light.”

Smith himself has been involved, as Gruden, while a broadcaster with ESPN, sent then Washington GM Bruce Allen an email that compared Smith’s lips to tires, a racist trope that became the first step toward the Raiders’ head coach resigning.

Gruden is gone, but the leaks continued and expanded to the cozy relationship between Allen and NFL general counsel Jeff Pash. The two joked about racial and political diversity and referenced attempts to lower player salaries. More significant, though, was the close nature of the relationship between the team executive and a man who would partly be responsible for investigations into franchise.

“The revelations in recent days about what Jeff Pash, Bruce Allen and others have said in private are both disrespectful and unacceptable in our sport, business and society and I have relayed my thoughts directly to the Commissioner with respect to this latest email release,” wrote Smith, who last week was reelected as the head of the players union.

Former members of the Washington Football Team’s cheerleaders have also called on the league to release its full findings. It was revealed the emails contained alleged inappropriate photos of the cheerleaders that were secretly distributed by coaches.

The Associated Press reported Friday said the NFL, through the investigation, has found no other team or league personnel used the same kind of racist, homophobic or misogynistic language Gruden did.

Smith would like the world to see for itself.
