Delhi Police releases traffic advisory ahead of Beating Retreat ceremony on Jan 29 | Details

As part of Republic Day celebrations, the Beating Retreat ceremony is held at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi on January 29 every year.

The Beating Retreat ceremony is a centuries-old military tradition dating back to the time when troops disengaged from battle at sunset. It is performed by the bands of the three wings of the military, the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, among others.

Additionally, Rashtrapati Bhawan, North Block, South Block and Parliament House are illuminated on the evening of January 29 every year.

Ahead of the grand ceremony, the Delhi Traffic Police has made arrangements and issued a traffic advisory. Here are the details:

TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

The following traffic restrictions will be in place on January 29, 2022 from 2 pm to 9.30 pm.

1. Vijay Chowk will remain closed for general traffic.

2. Traffic will not be allowed on the following stretches:

(a) Rafi Marg between Sunehri Masjid and Krishi Bhawan

(b) Raisina Road from Krishi Bhawan to Vijay Chowk

(c) Beyond Dara Shikoh Road roundabout, Krishna Menon Marg roundabout and Sunehri Masjid roundabout towards Vijay Chowk

(d) Rajpath between Vijay Chowk and ‘C’ hexagon

The traffic police have advised people to take alternate routes, which include Ring Road, Ridge Road, Aurobindo Marg, Madarsa T Point, Safdarjung Road, Kamal Ataturk Marg, Rani Jhansi Road, Minto Road and so on.

BUS DIVERSIONS

Between 2 pm and 9.30 pm on January 29, DTC and other buses will be diverted from their normal routes in order to avoid traffic congestion on roads near India Gate and Vijay Chowk.

1. Buses bound for Central Secretariat and Connaught Place coming from Shanti Path-Vinay Marg-Sardar Patel Marg will take Panchsheel Marg-Simon Bolivar Marg-Vande Mataram Marg-Shankar Road-Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Road.

2. Buses bound for Central Secretariat will terminate at Udyan Marg and return via Kali Bari Marg-Mandir Marg-Shankar Road.

3. Connaught Place-bound buses will take Mandir Marg-Kali Bari Marg-G.P.O. Baba Kharak Singh Marg-Connaught Place and return via Bhagat Singh Marg-Peshwa Road-Mandir Marg- Shankar Road-Vande Mataram Marg.

4. Buses coming from South Delhi on Tughlak Road and bound for Connaught Place or Central Secretariat will be diverted from Aurobindo Chowk to Safdarjung Road- Kamal Ataturk Marg- Panchsheel Marg-Simon Bolivar Marg and follow the route mentioned above.

5. Buses coming to Mandi House and Feroz Shah Road and proceeding to Connaught Place via Barakhamba Road will terminate at Shivaji Stadium and return via Kasturba Gandhi Marg/ Barakhamba Road.

6. Connaught Place-bound buses coming on Shahjahan Road will proceed to Shivaji Stadium via Aurobindo Chowk- Safdarjung Road-Kamal Ataturk Marg-Panchsheel Marg and beyond.

7. Buses bound for Old Delhi Railway Station, Red Fort and ISBT Kashmere Gate coming from south side will take Ring Road from AIIMS towards Dhaula Kuan and then Ridge Road and Rani Jhansi Road.

8. Buses bound for Old Delhi Railway Station, Red Fort and ISBT Kashmere Gate coming from Ashram side will take Ashram Chowk- Ring Road towards Sarai Kale Khan and proceed further via Raj Ghat.

9. Buses coming from Old Delhi Railway Station, Red Fort, Kashmere Gate and bound for South and South East will take Delhi Gate- Jawaharlal Nehru Marg-Rajghat-Ring Road- Sarai Kale Khan- Ashram Chowk.

10. Buses coming from Vikas Marg and bound for South will take Ring Road- Sarai Kale Khan-Ashram Chowk.

11. Buses coming from Connaught Place via Kasturba Gandhi Marg towards India Gate will take Minto Road- DDU Marg- I.P Flyover- Ring Road- Sarai Kale Khan.

METRO STATIONS

The entry and exit gates at Rail Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan and Central Secretariat metro stations will be shut from 2 to 6.30 pm on January 29.

Citizens have been asked to observe traffic rules and follow the directions of traffic personnel. Further updates will be provided via Delhi Traffic Police’s social media handles.
