New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has issued directives to combat the use of spurious Oxytocin hormone in the dairy colonies, emphasising the necessity of addressing animal cruelty and public health concerns throughout the capital city. A division bench of Justice Manmeet PS Arora and Acting Chief Justice Manmohan, ruled that providing Oxytocin without the required authorisation is illegal under the laws in force.
The issue was taken into consideration by the bench after Sunayana Sibal, Asher Jessudoss, and Akshita Kukreja filed a plea alleging violations of various laws in Delhi’s dairy colonies.
The court asked Department of Drugs Control, GNCTD, to carry out routine inspections and make sure that instances of spurious Oxytocin possession or use are reported in accordance with the relevant legislation. In addition to this, the Intelligence Department of Delhi Police has been entrusted with locating Oxytocin’s suppliers and prosecuting offenders.
The appeal emphasised that in order to protect public health and stop animal abuse, dairies must be moved to locations with suitable infrastructure and hygienic conditions.
The court voiced concern regarding the dairies situated in close proximity to the landfill sites, emphasising the urgent need to relocate these facilities as contaminated feed and milk may pose health risks.
The court acknowledged the need for relocation, but postponed issuing final orders until after more discussion with the appropriate authorities.
The key officials from the veterinary, food safety, and municipal bodies were instructed by the court to attend the May 8 proceedings.
