In his short time at the Power 5 level, new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has showcased an ability to get the most out of quarterbacks.
We have seen it with Jake Haener at Fresno State, and on a higher scale saw it with Michael Penix Jr. at both Indiana and Washington. Now at Alabama, DeBoer inherited Jalen Milroe who is one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the country, and also brought in Austin Mack from Washington.
However, DeBoer did end up losing five-star quarterback Julian Sayin who was a part of the 2024 class, which means he will be on the lookout for a young quarterback in this upcoming 2025 class to build around. According to a report by On3, DeBoer is pursuing another lefty quarterback, as he has his sights set on Notre Dame commit Deuce Knight.
The four-star told On3’s Chad Simmons earlier in February that Alabama has made him a major priority in their recruiting class.
“Since they got to Alabama, they have been coming after me hard. Coach DeBoer stopped by my school right away. I was the first stop he made when he got on the road,” Knight told On3’s Chad Simmons. “I know they want me.”
He also told Crimson Tide insider Andrew Bone on Friday that DeBoer and his family have already cultivated a relationship stemming back to the coach’s time at Indiana.
“This is a relationship that has gone for a long time. Coach DeBoer coached (Knight’s) brother at Indiana for a year when he was the offensive coordinator. They’ve known each other since I think Deuce was in the seventh or eighth grade, the relationship goes back that far,” said on ‘The Inside Scoop.
Aside from Alabama, Ole Miss and Colorado are a couple of the other programs that have been pushing hard for Knight. The Mississippi native ranks as the No. 62 player in the country according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, and has been committed to Notre Dame since last September.
